Hey i just recently purchased another 2GB of ram so i would have 4GB total but when i put all four sticks af ram in my computer i can't load vista and very get past the bios, but when i take out i stick so that its just 3GB it works fine. The ram it self is fine and not the problem and neither is the slot on the mother board also my bios recognized the 4GB but it won't load into Vista, im thinking it could be a power thing but i have a 600WATT PS so i really don't know what to do but its messing up my Dual channel configuration any help would be great,

ps. System specs below, oh and i have the lastest version of my bios

Thanks

Vista 32-bit won't recognize more than 3 GB, you need 64-bit for 4GB.

all 32-bit OS cant handle more than 3gb, try not to use 3x1gb because you'll now lose out on dual channel.

This board seems to quote this mythical 3GB number over and over again. The address space limitation will guarantee that you won't see all 4GB, but it certainly doesn't imply that you will only see 3 or the computer won't boot with more than 3. @ Reven, have you tried to swap out the RAM to see if one of the sticks are defective?

you should be starting up no problem. IT sounds like a DIMM slot problem, try running that 3rd stick in that DIMM slot that you had the 4th stick in. Also it could be a bad stick of RAM. IT happens.

To be fair I'm just repeating back what I read here, I don't have vista. However, since it won't recognize the full 4, and they sell it in units of 1 GB, the most you can buy and still have it recognize all of is 3 GB, (unless you bought a 512 stick or something.) You're right about the still being able to boot with it though.

to clearify the OS will just not utilise the 4gbs which is alrite seeing as 4gbs will only really be used probably in 2+ years time.

Are you using Vista 64?

I found this.... seem there's a lot of people having your problem.... I only skimmed it but it seems that more recent posts suspect that newer bios updated are causing the problem.... but whatever, I'll let you weed thru the250 or so posts of this thread.

this patch comes up a lot in that thread, but seems that it has mixed results....

Some motherboards have issues with 4GB of Ram as well even though they say they support more. Try your motherboard manufacturer support before a gaming message board. I would try anandtech as well.
