Might be upgrading to a Radeon 6950 soon, but I'm stuck on 500W. Is it fine for this kind of card?

What's worse is that I want to overclock this card to a Radeon 6970 :P I don't have a great knowledge of PSU's so any input will be greatly appreciated. My rig for the lulz:

AMD Athlon II X4 630 2.8GHz
OCZ 4GB RAM DDR2
EVGA GTS 250 512mb
ASUS M4A77D
Windows 7 32-bit (Need 64 D: )

Generally this isn't a good idea but tell us your PSU model anyway.

if it is a very nice 500watt like one of corsair's high quality it probably could handle it. But in general i would not reccomend it.

Eh, I knew it would come down to this. My PSU is an unknown brand, if I remember correctly. I think I'm better off saving for a better PSU. How would a GTX 470 be with a 500W Unknown Brand PSU

I for one would never trust an unknown brand PSU. Before upgrading to a shiny new GPU, I think you should get a new PSU. If the PSU fails on you, then you could lose more than just that. You'll probably want a PSU with at least 650W anyway.

The 6900 series GPUs have a feature which allows the user to adjust their power consumption by increasing it or decreasing it by 20 percent. Since 500 watts is the minimum recommended wattage for the 6950, decreasing its power consumption by 20 percent should prevent any problems. Hence, he could still get the card, and then pick up a new PSU later on.

I wouldnt pair a gtx 470 with an unknown brand either, it would be better for you to upgrade your PSU before getting a gfx of that cailiber because even if the psu luckiily can handle it, the stress that something like that would put under it can significantly lessen the lifespan of the psu and cause damage the the card if it is unable to consistently give what it needs.

If you had a decent brand then 500w is way more than enough, an i7 system overclocked to 4ghz and a 6950 doesn't even draw 350watts at load. I would really find out what brand though if possible.

I'm considering this. But I think, to be safe I should just wait and save up for a PSU. Hopefully there are some cheap ones though. And I mean really cheap because for me a Radeon 6950 is a pretty expensive card, but I really want that 6970 power.

But even with an unknown brand PSU, this "method" is safe?
