Building a new comp and wondering if my Enermax Liberty 500 watt will still cut it. This is what it will be powering:

AMD Phenom II 940

1 gb HD 4870

1 terabyte WD caviar hard drive

Gigabyte AMD 780G mobo

2x2 gb gskill 1066 ram

cd/dvd drive

5 case fans (antec 900)

My power supply is on the list of supported power supplies by ATI for the 4870 but wasnt sure how much of a difference the P2 940 would make.

Power supply specs: 2 12v rails at 22 amps each. (32 amps combined output).

Thanks a lot buying tomorrow!

Well it'll probably be able to do most of the work without any big problems, but you'd really want to get above 600W today. Modern hardware like the 4870 and Phenom II takes up quite a lot of juice when being stressed :)

500w is fine...there is more than enough really! my friend has a Q6600 OCed and a HD4870 x2 with a few hdd's and drive only using a corsair HX520w. If that powersupply can handle a HX4870x2 and an OCed cpu why can't it run yours?

Recommend PSU: HX520w or even a HX620w

I don't understand that. The 4870x2 uses more than 400W under full load, so that doesn't leave much for the CPU, drive, HDD, RAM and so on.

No Khaine, an entire system (cpu/hdd/mobo/ram/etc) + HD4870x2 uses a bit more than 400w under load :P

Thanks a lot. That saves some money. You think it will run a gtx 260 core 216 SC 55nm or SSC edition? I put aside $100 dollars in my budget for a power supply so this frees up more money to put towards a graphics card. I know it wont run a gtx 280 but I figure get a evga 260 now and upgrade later to a 295 and the psu. gtx 260 216 requires 36 amps and mine only does 32 amps though. Is it that much of a leap in power from a 4870 to a 260 216?

Yes, 2x6 pin connectors. Another reason why I could not go up to the 280.

EVGA page says the 285 needs 550w and 40 amps. I dont think I would want to run that with a quad core on a 500w. Even though I am under amps on the 260 216 my power supply is listed as supported by ATI for the 1 gb 4870, so I would think it would be able to run the 55nm 260 216. I am on a tight budget as well about 750 for a cpu, mobo, video card, ram,dvd/cd drive, and operating system. Almost thinking of dropping down to a dual core AMD 7750 2.7ghz Kuma processor and upgrading the psu to the corsair 650w instead of getting the quad.

$284 for AMD P2 940 and Gigabyte 780G mobo (newegg combo)

$76 for 2x2gb gskill 1066 ram and samsung dvd/drive (newegg combo)

$100 for windows vista 64 bit

$265 for EVGA gtx 260 216 SC (15 instant rebate)(will step up later) or

$209 for HIS 1 GB 4870

$740 total with a sata cable as well

The only reason I want to go with EVGA and Nvidia instead of ATI is for the step up program and EVGA has great customer service.

If I upgrade my PSU I wont have enough for the AMD Phenom II 940. I would have to go with the AMD 7750 2.7ghz Kuma dual core. $30 off the p2 940 and gigabyte mobo right now and I know I will upgrade anyways so I think it would be a waste to get the amd 7750 as I would be throwing away the combo deal as well as $80. Idk I am leaning towards going dual core and the psu though as this psu is 2 years old and I used to play WoW so it has really been used.

the 7000 series athlons are powerful but you lose performance compared to the phenom 2 940,

and that isnt the best motherboard id recomend you get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131331 its got the SB750 southbridge with makes it better for overclocking that is if you plan to overclock it which i highly recomend doing if your getting the 940. its also got a newegg combo deal with the phenom 2 940

basically the 940 is the enthusiast version and has the unlocked multiplier for overclockers so if your not going to overclock you can just get the phenom 2 920 saves a bit of money for a video card.

I agree....I have the 700w version in my backup system, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002 running an E6600, 2 HHD's, 2 burners, 8800GTX OC'ed, sound card, Zalman 9500, 4GB of memory and 5 case fans. Provides plenty of clean power and is very quiet. I think with rebate you can get for under 60 dollars at Newegg now...I highly recommend it. .....If I were to have one complaint about it...it would be it's not modular cables.
