512 8800 GTS or 768 8800 GTX ??

I want to buy a new PC but I am not sure which graphics card to get. 512MB 8800 GTS or 768MB 8800 GTX ??

I will be using windows xp (dont want vista), 2.5 GHz Intel Quad cpu, 24" monitor at a native resolution of 1900x1200 and a PSU of 550 watts.

Which card is better for that resolution ?? What are the pros and cons of both cards ?

512, OCed it's the same or better, more efficient. X360PS3AMD05

Not at the resolution it isn't. It will benefit from the 768MB or Vram more.

the 8800GTX is a good card of high resolution, and the 9800 gtx is almost the same as 8800 GTS G92

Now move on to 25x16 and notice what happens in 2 particular games.In dark messiah the 8800 GTX is giving 60FPS and the 9800 is giving 27FPS!

Then in oblivion the 8800 GTX is giving 30FPS and the 9800 is giving 7FPS!

Now ofcourse the TC wont be playing in 25x16 but what this shows is that the 8800GTX just has more "lasting muscle" then the 9800GTX.Period.

Your choice should be between 8800GTS and 8800GTX.8800GTS is quite powerful even for this res but since you have the money I highly suggest you to buy 8800GTX as it's extra muscle will prove worth it for you in different occasions and future games.

My point being is the 9800 GTX is $100 CHEAPER then the 8800 GTX.. and I never said it beat GTX in every test.. But it beats them in the majority.. And I would think you would understand that both Oblivion and Dark Messiah are bugs.. They are much older games, you have to think there is something wrong with drivers right there.

And no it's not a driver issue,the 9800GTX has just run out of VRAM.

thats quite a high res TC. a GTX would be better for dealing with games at that res....however even that is going to struggle unless u dont mind knocking off a few details here and there....it just doesent have the necessary umph.

if ure set on that res and demand high settings @30FPS in all games then u might want to consider SLI....or perhaps a GX2 variant card (though i hear that getting 2 seperate cards is actually a little cheaper). otherwise ure going to need to replace it again fairly soon.

Thanks. The majority of the replies are telling me to buy the 512MB 88000 GTS. So I will take that route.

Please tempt me away from buying a X360 console LOL. Give me good reasons why I should avoid buying a X360 ?? I feel so angry and upset at so many developers who are giving priority to developing console games. Why is M$ locking all the great games and making them timed exclusives and some developers (like R*, Ubisoft) are just delaying the PC versions ? It is because of lack of development time and that console games sell a lot better than the PC version (e.g. Bioshock).

I really would just get an 8800GT, it's just as powerful as the GTS and much less energy consuming. If you want top notch go for the 8800GTX but only if you don't mind your electricity bill to shoot through the roof.MisterEgo

I'd get a 9800gtx if i were you, if not that then a decent brand GTS like BFG. There is little difference in the superclocked GTS' and the GTX and the GTS comes out cheaper.

And what's stopping you from overclokcing an 8800GTX although I'll give that the GTS certainly is a better ocer.
