5870-6870 price question

A month ago i bought myself 2 5870's each costing around £290. I looked on the website i got them from just to see what the prices of the 6870 are and to my surprise they are £190. Im presuming that the 6870 is more powerful than the 5870( I dont know a great deal about the specs) I renember reading that its about 20% more powerful. So i was wondering why is the 6870 so cheap in comparison to the 5870. Ofcourse if the 5870 is still the more powerful card then that answers my question.

It's actually weaker than the 5870 by a little. However, the price/performance ratio for it at the current price it's at makes it a much better buy than the 5870. What you're talking about with the 20% increase (or more, even) is the 6900 series (6950/6970 being the replacements for 5850/5870, and the 6990 being the replacement for 5970), which should be coming out next month or so.

The 6870 is between the 5850 and 5870 when it comes to performance. But its also without the year of driver updates/upgrades that the hd5800 series got, which improved their performance, ask any 5700/5800 card owner. So that gap has a decent chance of getting smaller, or even maybe disappear totally.

Not to mention the 6870 launches at $239 (which I think is a more than reasonable price) here in "U.S." before Winter Solstice sales, and before the gtx5 series from Nvidia launches.

But the 6870 is just so much sexier when it comes to wattage and clock speeds vs the 5870 with its heat issues.

The 5870 was the top-end single GPU solution for the HD5000 series and the HD's5770/5750 were the upper mid-range ones.

However the 6800 series are the upper-mid range solutions and the HD6900 series cards are going to be the top-end solutions , as per the HD6000 series naming convention goes.So the 5870 is bound to be costlier than the 6870 and even beats the 6870.
