Hello everyone! Im looking into buying a new rig. I have roughly $350 for the CPU, but I seem to have hit a fork on the road.

I can get 4 cores, but for a few more bucks I can get 6 cores!! I mean the more cores the better right? Then again, are games using more than 4 cores though? So would itbe worth it?

Neither of those CPUs. If you're prepared to spend $350 on a CPU, definitely got for a sandy bridge, preferably the i7 2600k.

Seeing as how AMD gives me 6 cores for $270 I would like to keep it at that range with some head room. The intel equivelant of the above CPU would be this one. Roughly the same price and from what I understand, the I7 is better than its AMD counterpart.

If its for gaming you should go for the new i5/i7 from Intel.

Here you have a comparison of the 3 CPU's you've picked, and the old i7 still beats it a pretty much everything. The new i5/i7 is about 25% faster then that again.

Wow! Thanks alot. It seems obvious that the i7 is the right choice. It would appear that the extra 2 cores dont really help at all. And I guess they become even more useless in gaming seeing as how no games use 6 cores. Thanks everyone!

since sandy bridge. Neither of the available 6 cores from both amd and intel are worth their price tag.

amd's six core is not as good as the i7's 1st gen & 2nd gen. Even in CPU driven applications.

If your looking to burn $350 on a CPU you'll want the i7 2600k. You will not regret it. The performance gap between the two speaks for itself. Its even faster in multithreaded tasks like video creation and has lower power consumption.
