You can do better than that....
I built a computer for 450 (no monitor) that games just fine. It was an AMD build that had an 8600gt, 2 gigs of corsair memory, antec 450W PSU, cooler master case (that blue one, no window), vista basic, dvd-rw drive, and a 320GB WD hdd.
Alright, after looking at newegg...

Total comes to 641.73 with shipping, minus 60 bucks in mail in rebates.. Grand total is
$581.73

This is only for a game that I would consider OK for gaming... The motherboard has junk integrated graphics that could work for basic tasks.

Where can cuts be made?
-get an 8600 or an hd2600pro.. could probably take up to 40 bucks off the price.
-use an old dvd drive from the last computer... takes 26 bucks off the price
-reformat your old hdd, and use it in the new computer.. (I generally do not recommend that)- but would take $65 off the price
-wait for a better deal on cases.. because there are not many great low end options on sale atm that I would trust.. was 20 bucks cheaper for a similar case to the one I listed here
These parts look very good for such range. I do agree that AMD cpus are way better than Intel when it comes to very tight-budget like yours.Alright, after looking at newegg...
