Newegg has a nice sale on Vista home premium 64 bit System Builders. So I was thinking of upgrading from my 32 bit. But I was wondering how much of a performance increase would there be on my system?

EVGA 8800gt 512mb

AMD Athlon x2 5600+ 2.38Ghz

4gb Kingston HyperX 240-pin DDR2 1066

Biostar TF7050-M2

Realtek RTL8168B/8111B PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC

I am using a Standard Compaq Keyboard and a Dynex DX-WOM2 Mouse

Thank you for any help you can provide, I would like to upgrade to 64 bit but I am not sure if it is worth it. Also on a side note, I can install the System Builders Edition after formating my hdd right?

it should be noticable when running multiple apps like say adobe photo with a large image and many layers going and running firefox or some other browsers with many tabs open, or some other instances like that. Games won't really have much or any of a boost but things should load faster at start up and all around go about 10% faster. At least it did for my brother when i turned him on to vista 64 bit home prem.

The cool thing about your case is that you will actually get a boost in RAM by moving to 64 bit.

A 32 OS can only detect about 3.5GB(or something like that) .

A 64 Bit OS will  detect all 4gb, and more .

Another 500mb of ram (if thats the case) will probably barely even be noticable, but still its better to be running 64-bit with 4gb, but you have the downside of slightly more compatibility issues with 64-bit.

Well it's more than that because it detects 3.5 of your ram and your video ram since he has a 512 mb he would gain an extra gig.

meh unlike XP, vista 64bit seems to have little no issues regarding compatibility. I haven't encountered one problem actually. Just make sure when u download the right drivers and alike, you will need to download the 64bit drivers once u upgrade and not the 32bit, if you do u will encounter issues lol.

4gbs of ram - the 512 from the video card leaves him with 3.5gb of random access memory because 512mb is taken by the video. So if you don't wanna specify the video ram and ram on the mobo he has 4gbs in use. Upgrading to vista 64bit he would gain the 512mb missing from the mobo ram taken up by the vram.

Oh wait I wasn't thinking. I forgot it's 4 gb in all, I was thinking 3.5 for all.

Can't you just call MS and pay a little bit to get a 64-bit key? I thought once you had the disc you didn't need to buy it all over again for 64 bit support...............

32-bit and 64-bit use the same key, you just need the different media. If he knew someone with 64-bit media he could use his current key, unless maybe if its something like a dell/hp/gateway/etc system disk.

sorry, but that is simply not correct. i would not write things in the forum unless you are sure it is true, and if you are not sure you should at leaste type that in as well. in practice there are NOT compabillity issues with Vista64 that are not there in the 32 bit version.

What isnt correct? And there are games that won't run, or have problems in 64-bit. There may not be many, but they exist. And 64-bit cannot run 16-bit code. You can get around that with dosbox and such, but it still cant run 16-bit code, while 32-bit can.

No, but OEM 32-bit key, can be used on 64-bit oem cd. So if you have a friend with a 64-bit disc, you can use your old key and it will work fine.

"but you have the downside of slightly more compatibility issues with 64-bit." that part isnt all that correct :). my experience after nearly 2 years with those versions of windows are basically that whatever work with the 32 bit version will work on the 64 bit. differences in hardware setups and such has a much greater compability issue, but that is unavoidable in the PC world. :) peace man, no fight.

np, but 64-bit does have additional compatibility concerns, whether you've seen them or not... :) Software which uses device drivers for instance, I think will be problematic on 64-bit. That is if there was only a 32-bit version.

i agree on that :) drivers need to be 64 bit. 32 bit drivers will for SURE create problems.

I have a crappy HP Vista install so I can't use a friends disk..... :( Still though is there a driver scanning utility or something similar that will check if my hardware is 64bit compatible?

:) you dont need to check if it is 64bit compatible or not. it is. what is said here is that you need to make sure you install the 64 bit drivers that you need from third parts supliers and not the 32 bit drivers. you know,,, sound drivers, mother board drivers, game controll drivers and such. :) It is allways wise to have those drivers ready on a CD/DVD or memmory stick etc etc, before you start the install of your 64 bit OS. :)

What I meant was that not all hard ware is 64bit so I was wondering if there was a way to scan my comp to see if there are available 64 bit drivers for my hard ware. I will just have to research it all my self, I was just worried I would forget something.

:) i havent heard of a program like that, maybe someone else in here have ?. if not, if you can make one im sure it will make you a few millions.. :D. serioussly, it isnt much of a job really, you know the name of the basic components in your computer,,, i hope. like your graphics card and what mobo you got, if that has your network card integrated, those two drivers are what you need most, the mobo and the graphics driver. soundcard driver too, though you can allways get that later but nice to have. the rest, for printers, web cams and stuff you can get after the install of the 64 bit is done. :) if you feel all this is a bit of a hazzard, you can allways take a bit of time away from the thought, spend some days on the net reading one of the many fine step by step guides there are around that guide you past any obstickle:), google a bit about, and you will find many good guides for this kind of things :)

What about old games (Doom 3, GTA, COD..etc)...I've read there are compatible issues on vista 64 that are not on the 32 bit version...is it true?
