I've seen 512mb 4850s on newegg for less than $100, sometimes even as low as $80.

I'm wondering if this would be a compelling upgrade over my old G80 core 640mb 8800GTS, or if I'd be better off saving my money.

It's hard finding benchmarks that directly compare these two cards.

You would definetly see a difference in performance but I think you'd be better off with a 4870 or 260 if you want a significant upgrade.

i'd say nah - a 4850 would definitely be faster, but a 4870 would be -much- faster if they still go on sale for low $100's

You'd see a good improvement in performance.

I currently use 2x 8800GTS 512MB (G92) in SLI and the performance I get out of these two cards is roughy between the HD 4850 and 4870 or fairly close to the GTX 260 (192) version.

Your 8800GTS 640MB runs about as well as the 9600GT out there. Look for benchmarks between the 9600GT (your card would be slightly under this for performance) and the HD 4850. This might give you a better idea of what to expect and might be easier to find.

If you're not looking for something terribly expensive, but want a fairly decent jump in performance, going to the HD 4850 would be a good step. It'll run you what...maybe $90 (give or take a little)? Maybe also look around for a low priced HD 4870 or a GTX 260 (though I doubt you'd find the GTX 260 this low in price unless you bought it used somewhere). Then a good 18-24 months down the road you can save up for a good DX11 card then. Trying to buy one when they first come out will be spendy, so you might as well wait for a bit before jumping on that bandwagon.

Yeah, about 5 - 15 frames depending on what game.

I say go for a HD 4870.

doing a similar upgrade soon to. 8800gts 640mb to a gtx260 (216). the 8800gts wiht an i7 just seems to have issues with GPU accelerated photoshop cs4 stufff, when previously we saw no issues with the same card but with an old e6400.

Two 8800gts 512mb perform between a 4850 and 4870? considering that a 9800gx2 is two underclocked 8800gts 512 cards and that it is almost as good as a 280gtx in some games, I think you should be getting more performance than that.

If you think about, from the benches I've seen - 2x of the 8800GTS 512 perform not quite as well as the GTX 260 - the HD 4870 1GB performs on par (sometimes better, sometimes not) with the GTX 260. If my two cards aren't as good as the GTX 260 (for the most part, depends on the game and settings), then that would put them around the HD 4870 - not quite as good, but certainly better then the HD 4850. Unless I'm mistaken, the 9800GX2 has a better bandwidth to process info and it also makes use of 1GB of memory, instead of my 2x 8800GTS 512 cards only making use of 512MB because cards in SLI don't combine their RAM - SLI only makes use of the memory on one card. I can honestly say I don't know much about the 9800GX2....so my knowledge on it might be a little off.
