hey guys im looking into building a new computer and am not sure whether i should buy a new psu or not.

Im currently using OCZ STEALTHXSTREAM 600W PSU OCZ600SXS (sorry i cant get a link, i bought it several months ago and the link is no longer available).

Anyway i was wanting to SLI/crossfire either 2 gtx 460s or 2 6870 and was wondering if i could use my psu from my current computer.

I also plan on using an amd processor (phenom II x6) and not quite sure on the ram.

thanks

Dont risk it, theres a good chance you'll have problems as the cards mentioned sli'd are going to be power hungry. You want at least 750 watt+

It depends on the parts, but even so I afree with sn4k3_64. I would go for a 750W PSU but it mostly depends on the machine.

Depending on the type of GPU, the power supply will have to reserve 2x160 watt (GTX460), 2x220 watt (GTX570), 2x250 (GTX580) and 2x300 watt (GTX480) for the cards alone. Count between 65 and 130 watt for the processor and you're in trouble with a 600 watt power supply...

Better go for a PSU from 850W to 1000W...

650 W is just fine for two GTX 460 if you also overclock GPU and CPU 750 W is plentifull, unless you have like 10 hard drives.

Absolutely true. But still, I personally would opt for a 850 watt supply, just because of the small diff in price between a 750 and 850 watts, plus, you have higher amps on an 850... But like I said, that's me. :)

Whatever you do just get a Corsair or a PCpowerncooling brands or anything thats upper tier. The shotty brands tend to underperform and overrates their psu therefore your not really getting a true ex:850w if the brand is crap, also you dont want to be playing the risk game with that much power and the thing just blows up on you. The better brands offer more power to the 12v rail that powers your graphics card. A good 12v single rail is better than multiple rails, even though corsair has stickers all over that say is multirail it is in fact a single rail and so is pcpnc and other good brands.

Just to be safe 850w go for 480 on the setup.

You can try run it with a 650watt, for a certainty, I know that Nvidia GPU's downclock themselves and even shutdown stream processors if they aren't getting enough power. I know because I tried running a 8800GTS 512 on a 400watt PSU.

It shutdown atleast half the SP, and downclocked itself, it was even nice enough to alert me that it wasn't getting enough power. The 460's should do the same.

Not sure if the AMD cards do that, but someone else here may know.

Ahh okay, yeah I think ill just save an extra $150 or so to play it safe.

Thanks for suggesting the brands, I'll take a look on the site now and see if they stock them... If only newegg would ship to Australia, I'd save so much money :( haha.

Also are the AMD x6 processors a strong choice for gaming? They seem alot cheaper than the i7s so I'm not sure if im sabotaging myself by going with AMD (sorry to the AMD fans if that offended you :( im just clueless haha)

if it is just for gaming get an x4, unless you are getting the 1100T.

the phenom II are decent for gaming, the i7s are better, but much more expensive.

I'm not 100% on all the parts yet, pretty much just window shopping now since I've finished school and can actually start working/saving more.

I've held off on finishing crysis because i decided it would be best to wait until i could max out the game before i played too much, so I'm hoping to be able to do that.

Also, just by the way, do you think the next TES game will be as insane to run as oblivion was on release?

Crysis is still one of the, if not the most graphically demanding game out there.

Brands that I would recomennd is Corsair, Seasonic, Cooler Master,PCP&C(they arent cheap) and also maybe antec but I have read reviews that their PSU's arent in their best game. But there are a lot of brands that are as good as these but people dont have to much experience with them so they may be considered not reliable. If you find a PSU that you would like to purchase do some reading up on it. :)
