I'll probably buy a full HD tv soon to use for my ps3, but most games are native in 720p, so does playing games on 720p mode on a native 1080p tv give black bars or slowdowns? And do you have to set the tv to 720p mode, the ps3 to 720p mode or both?

I'm a bit new to the whole HD gaming :|

Well I have a 42inc HD TV which can do up to 1080p. If I set it to 720p I get weird black bars and some light flashing every time a game jumps to a loading black screen or you enter a new room. However 1080p works fine and I can't tell the difference. But just about every game is made in 720p they would or should look better in 720p but the size of the TV also matters. I also believe it matters how far away you are from the TV to notice the difference.

You just set the PS3 to 1080p mode and if a game doesn't support it, it will just play in 720p. Also the issue I had above was with my 360 and not my ps3.

So I say get the TV and the HD cables and just set it to 1080p and the PS3 will do all of the work. I am pretty sure you won't notice a difference if it flips between 720p-1080p for games.

My Xbox is set to 720p at the moment because RE5 has nasty tearing at 1080p, no borders and looks exactly the same to be honest, also no noticable lag. The thing is it all depends on your tv though, as long as it upscales fast and does a good job of it you shouldn't have any issues.

Well I have a 1080p TV and the PS3 automatically changes the resolution to 720p when I fire up a game. Also most Blurays display in 1080p so that's a benefit of upgrading.

Also the 360 just upscales the image depending on your settings. It doesn't really do 1080p either.

Like the guy above said in games you wont see a difference since almost no games are naturally 1080p. Hook a PC up or pop in a blu ray and then compare, thats where you will see the difference.

There is FFXIII, which has 1080p CG cutscenes which look absolutely amazing at 1080p. The game just upscales the in game stuff to 1080p from 720p.

(Sometimes upscaling helps, but sometimes it doesn't) Uncharted 2 and Assassins Creed 2 both look worse when being upscaled to 1080p but look just fine at 720p so you really don't lose much picture quality if it is just 720p. PS3 and 360 games will look fine and will still wow you so don't worry.

If you worried about how they will look be certain to buy a brand name TV as they have better up-scaling abilities than the cheaper ones.

I was thinking about the Samsung LE32B550. Samsung is supposedly a good lcd brand right? :P I will try it out in the store to test the input lag in the gamemode in any case, as that worries me the most.

Even when you change it to 720p, the TV still outputs at 1080p (unless you have borders around the image). Also the Xbox 360 can and does 1080p.

Yep depends on the scaler, they're the same aspect ratio so the whole black bars doesn't play into this :? Doubt you'll notice it, depends more on screen size to see the subpar graphicals of the consoles.......but hey at least it's next gen.

Ah they are the same aspect ratio, thanks, that answers my question fully. I forgot to mention the aspect ratio in the topic.
