I'm about to get a new HDTV today, and I was wondering if there was that much of a difference to notice between 720p and 1080p for my 360? I'm thinkin about getting either a 32" or 40" HDTV.  Any suggestions are welcome too.

Not in that size range i have 3 LCD HDTVS . Both 720P and 1080P and unless you have a really big screen i cant tell the difference. I have a Sharp Aqaos 42 in. 1080P and also a Sony 26 inch Bravia 720Pi game on and the 720P Sony gets just as good a picture. Most games are a native resoultion of 720P anyway so thats what youre gonna see in most cases anyway. So for gaming on the 360 no there is imo no difference 99% of the time.

At these sizes I would only consider 1080p if you plan on using it as a computer monitor. If you are viewing the screen from a normal movie-viewing distance of several feet (or meters if you prefer), you will not be able to see the difference, even with a 1080p source. The following chart may help, as well as this discussion:

A 42'' 1080P screen should be fairly cheap now so i say go for it. Try to sit 4 or 5 feet away though........

it also depends on what you want to do with it long term....

if it will be just your xbox station, then 720P would be fine. Xbox game resolution is 720P/1080I. Even if you tv is native 1080P, it will still show 720P resolution.

If you plan to do more (HD DVD, Blu ray) in the future, go 1080P now.

Xbox 360 can output to any resolution you choose. Games not native 1080p can be upscaled to that. Trust me I have 1080p TV, Elite and a PS3. Its the PS3 that can't upscale its games.
