Hey guys so I have finally decided to upgrade my video card and I have narrowed it to these two.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202001

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125462

The 7970 is about 100$ cheaper after rebate, and since I don't need the games I could probably sell them for 20$ more. My main concern is going from Nvidia to AMD I won't enjoy the switch, I have also heard that pretty much all of the 7800/7900 series cards tend to have coil whine which leaves me worried. Any input would be greatly appreciated right now I game at 1920x1080 I would like to go 3 monitors next year but maxing games wouldn't be a priority with 3 of them just being able to run them on high well. Also wondering which one would last me longer because i'm hoping to make the card last me atleast 2 years.

They are pretty much on par in performance with the 770 getting a slightly lead. I say 7970. Coil whine is dependent on the fan cooler, not the card. The Vapor-X coolers are top notch and one of the best on the market. You will be able to overclock that 7970 to past 770 levels. Eyefinity is also better than Surround from my experience. AMD focuses more on Eyefinity than Nvidia does on Surround. Up to you though. Both cards are great.

7970 Ghz is probably 15% worse than the 770 you picked out. It is not worth the extra money imo. If you were considering a stock 770 it would be a tougher decision, but the stock 770 only has 2GB of VRAM.

Also coil whine will not be prevalent on the 7970 you picked out. You will only notice it on splash screens before games. You can limit it all together if you just use a frame limiter.

Only cards I know of that had whining coils were the XFX Black Editions -I know cuz I had one.  Both my MSI lightnings don't whine.

Get the 7970, it's $100 less and has more RAM which will suit you just fine going for Eyefinity...

The 7970ghz is the better bang for your buck but the gtx 770 is the better card (especially since the link you posted is the 770 4GB windforce edition). You can't go wrong with either choice

Out of those 2, I'd get the 7970ghz edition.  That price with the games is very nice.

7970 since you get all those great games for free!

Or wait for the 8950 as someone else suggested.

get which ever you like, but the 7970 is a pretty sweet card at that price point.  Id get the 7970 because of cheaper price/good overclockability.  All in all the 7970 is slightly slower than a 770 but the question you need to ask yourself is, is that worth paying the extra $100 for?

Thanks for the suggestion's guys, I ended up ordering the 770 because after Newegg tax it was only 50$ more than then 7970 and at that price I just felt more comfortable with it. Coming tomorrow and I can't wait! although i'm hoping it fits in my case.....

The 7970 GHz would have been the better purchase. We're looking at performance that is slightly slower (few frames) than the GTX 770 for nearly $100 cheaper, and 3GB of vram. I'm pretty sure next-gen multi-platform games will be more vram hungry. Paying for the 4GB 770 isn't worth it.

Going to get the 7970 instead. Found out Newegg is also offering a 20$ off Promo code which just makes it that much cheaper. Unfortunately the Gigabyte 770 wouldn't fit in my case, and unfortunately Amazon already shipped it so now I have to send it back. :P

Hmm, actually they're both huge, but you can squeeze a bit of the tail inside the docks for HDDs. Even though I have a 7970 and I love it, I'd recommend a GTX770 since AMD's 8000 series is coming out at the end of this year. You'd want something that lasts you a little longer being new.

Depends on what case he has, too.  Larger cases which have the HDD's sitting at a 90° angle are okay.  My 7970ies fit in a CM690II Advanced, CM Storm Trooper, Antec 1200 (but there you have to keep the middle HHD cage free) and of course my Cosmos II Ultra...

Does your 560Ti only just fit? The 7970 is 11.2 inches so if the 770 doesn't fit it's likely the 7970 won't.

I just upgraded from a 560 Ti to a 760, and the new card is way longer.  It barely fits in my case.

Yay! Stick with the 7970. Did you get the re-loaded bundle where you get all those game for free?

Also, on a side note next gen console will all be using AMD's GCN technology which is what the 7970 is based off of. Meaning future games will more likely be optimized for AMD GPU's so in the longer run you may get better performance over the 770 because next gen consoles don't use nVidia GPU's.

That was really a captain obvious statement earlier. OP has the intelligence to decide his card is too big or too small. If there's any doubt he'd google query his case and the card to see if anyone else has done it... or he could build a model with cardbord or micro density fiberboard...

Good to know. I guess I'll have to take a Dremel and saw off the bottom part of the HDD cage (of my minitower) which goes unused anyway.

So the 770 came today and I thought maybe I would just settle and save the hassle of having to return it then reorder a 7970. Unfortunately as I originally suspected it wouldn't fit it was a VERY tight fit and I didn't want to risk opening the plastic wrapping and then not being able to return it without having to shove it into the case. Unfortunately playing the waiting game has soured me to because now the 7970 doesn't have the games listed anymore.

What's obvious to one isn't to the other.  You'd be amazed at how many folk went running to the store to get a new GPU and came home, foaming about the mouth, to only conclude that the card didn't fit inside the enclosure...

Besides, unless you know the op, how do you know he's intelligent enough to not make silly mistakes.  No disrespect to the OP, by the way, nor towards you, Captain. ;)

That reminds me of how I barely skimmed by with fitting my old ASUS DirectCUii 3 slot GTX 570 in an old Apevia Jupiter JR mid tower case.

The end of the video card is literally pressing against the hard drive cage.

It fits but with not even a mm of extra space.

?? Or some lube may work?

How big can the 770 be? Shouldn't the 7970 be bigger?

Bikouchu35
depends on the mfr. http://hothardware.com/Reviews/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-770-Review-With-Gigabyte-and-MSI/ the first gtx 770 here is 10.5 inches http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-726.shtml This 7970 ghz is ~12.2 inches. http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&lid=1&pid=1679&leg=0 this 7970 ghz is ~11.2 inches. that second one ghz isn't that much bigger, but with a tight clearance it could matter edit: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-770-gk104-review,3519-29.html this 770 is longer than the sapphire vapor-x 7970 ghz

For reference's sake here is my case I think it might be time to upgrade though, because if the 7970 Ghz is also over 10" it probably won't fit either.

yeah idk if you can remove some of the bays... plus I'd be concerned with cooling because you have room for two fans. The 7970ghz emits a lot of heat. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119227 this is what I use. Came with one 120mm input fan, I added three more input (66cfm) and one output. Only thing is it's kinda cheaply made: once you take out the PCI slots they aren't going back in, and I ended up taping the fan grates to the outside of the case because they fell off inside within days. But I didn't want to spend much money on a case at the time and it works fine now. Shop around. I personally won't go with a mid ATX case again, nor one that doesn't come fully loaded with fans or PCI slots that are reusable.

For 20$ more (I normally don't bother with rebates) I think I might go with a full tower and get this.

The one you linked was 49.99$ after a rebate or 59.99$ otherwise. Mine has a 20% off 100$ which would make it 80$...or 20$ more. :P
