I can't get my PS3 to play a PS3 game in high definition! I know it's not the TV, because everything else works in high definition, from my computer, 360, even to the PS3 menu and demos I download. However, once I put in a PS3 game and play it, it switches to standard definition. I've checked all the settings, but nothing seems out of place. I am using component cables. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Is the PS3 set to output in high def? I don't own a PS3 but if it's anything like the Xbox then there will be some setting for it in the menu system.

From the sounds of it you are trying to play games on an older CRT Rear Projection TV that only supports 480p/1080i and the games only support 720p.My friend has this issue with his CRT RPTV and game like NHL 09 only play in 480p.

That would be my guess.

My TV is a Samsung 52" LNT5265, which definitely supports 1080p. As mentioned above, I play my 360 on 1080p on that same TV, run my computer at 1080 on it too, and do everything on a PS3 on 1080p, except play PS3 games on disc (downloaded demos and games are in 1080p). I checked the video settings on my PS3, it lets me check the checkbox for 1080p, but won't let me uncheck the standard def checkbox (it's greyed out and doesn't respond to any buttons), but I figured thats a default setting that you can't remove. I've tried everything in the settings, from checking all the supported resolutions, to only checking one of each at a time.

i suspect its your component cables. you can always do better with the cheapest hdmi cable (probably under $10)

this article does a good job of explaining the differences between cables

Do you have the 720p box checked? Some games will revert to 480p if you dont.

Hmmm. I agree that the most likely culprit would be your cables only because nothing else seems wrong. Try hdmi or different component cables. If you have all resolution boxes checked, it should definitely work because if a game is not 1080p, it will drop down a step... I'm not sure what's wrong

I am having the exact same problem!!

The PS3 will not let me de-select 576P, its greyed out, I can unselect everything else but not that resolution. As a result, I cannot force 1080P whilst playing in-game, it defaults to 576P unless I have the native resolution of the game selected as well.

Very annoying, would love to know a work around. Might try a different HDMI cable to see if it has anything to do with that.

I have the same ploblem 576 is grey and untouchable so I have to play Games as native and that means most 720p but I have a 50" 1080P set and it seems a bit of a waste.

The picture quality does'nt get any better on a higher resolution. The native resolution is best. I use my receiver to upscale everything, but the picture is'nt better at 1080p when the game is'nt made for it. But the menu should run at 1080p if the tv supports it.

I have to disagree when I compared Grid on both the PS3 and the 360 then the 360 upscaled the image to 1080p the game was less jaggie than the PS3 that only displayed at 720p when I put the 360 back down to 720 they were almost identical, so it does make a difference.

The difference depends on the console and the TV. Depending on which is doing a better job of scaling. Your mileage may very.
