Just got my boyfriend into the wonders of PC Gaming, he wanted to get a laptop for gaming but thankfully I enlightened him on a custom build that I could make for him. So how does the price/performance ratio look? the build in general?

That looks good, but I don't see an optical drive on the list. That shouldn't add more than $25 to the total, though. (unless you have a spare you were going to use)

Drop the mATX board. Replace it with something like an 870A-UD3 from Gigabyte. Limited expansion with those boards.

Wait, how is this 800$? How much are you saving through bundles? 800$ Before shipping and taxes? This works out as an 878$ subtotal for me at the Canadian Newegg, WITHOUT the OS, but also without any bundles...

$812.92 after $60 rebate

NVIDIATI

I've discussed the topic about MIR's a while back with a few people here, and it's pretty much been confirmed that they are not reliable at all. So when considering the price points of yours and the original build above, I would actually look at yours as 872.92, with a slight chance of getting some money back.

And this is based on personal experience. I'll describe it to you in two words: four months.

That's pretty damn good for $800. If it's a purpose built gaming machine, then you could save a bit of money by getting an Athlon II x4, very few games will miss the L3 cache of a Phenom II. Though other non gaming applications may like the L3......Also take into consideration how many RAM slots that Asus mobo has (probably two?). It's not hard to find a nicely priced microATX with 4 slots. Might be a pain for the memory upgrade path with only two slots, and last you could get a smaller HDD to further lower your total price. Big HDDs are nice though. What you got now is still pretty damn excellent, considering it's got that high specs, has the OS there, and even an 80 plus PSU.

Its only $60 not the end of the world if you only get it back in while...And my opinion on your build is it lacks the ability to grow. It has a single PCI-E x16, and a 550watt PSU. No chance of a crossfire unless you would change both of those. I do like your choice in case, GPU and CPU is pretty good. Ram is on the lower end of DDR3 but a quality brand.

For my first build I had over 150$ worth of rebates, which I never got back and never expected them to. For 60$ I an upgrade the GPU to a HD5870, and I'm sorry but that case is hideous. Yes, the mobo has 4 slots for RAM lol I might just wait till the new HD6000's to come out, even if they fail the other cards will drop in price so it's a win-win.

What about the PSU? Personal prefrence... but I feel that the 58's are way overpriced....
