Well depends on the games, on games where performance difference don't make much of a difference (eg older games 62fps vs 70 fps between 8600GTand 7900GS etc) 7900GS tend to do better. But in newer more demanding games, where a performance differences are actually meaningful (going from sub 20 fps to mid 20fps) 8600GT pretty much always do 10-30% better than a 7900gs.

the various links in the following benchmarks, in older games already with massive FPS 7900gs tend to do better, in newer games where 7900gs and 8600gt tend to hover in the 20-30fps range 8600GT tend to do better.
