No way, if you have to pay $850, if you need a card get the 9800 gx2. Lets just hope that nvidia will lower their ridiculous prices.Luminouslight
I dont want to pay more than $600
I wanted to buy a GTX 280 for $650 but its $850+14% tax in Canada. Is it worth it? **** Nvidia. Who will spend $1000 on a **** video card?AnxietyDisorderEh no thats a total ripoff. The 8800gt sli is $320 not including $60 in rebates and it will perform close to that $850 card(some benchmarks show the 8800gt beating it every time). Not to mention even the $450 9800 gx2 performs close also (has also been seen beating the gtx 280) These are all in canadian prices also
if uve got the money, look at the 3 monsters on top of EVERY chart in firingsquad's review:

If you have $1900 spare change....
People need to stop ****ing and deal with it. Nvidia priced their extremely impressive and powerful video card at a high cost. Why? Because it is a freaking beast. Sure it may be a little bit overpriced (I say it is worth $550 tops), but it is their right to do it. Will it hurt them sales wise? Yes, but that is not your problem. Buy it, or don't, stop complaining. Paying a ton of cash for the best of the best is completely understandable.
The GTX260 is $200 less and offers about 75% of the performance. Don't want to buy that? Just wait for ATI's new 4000 line, it is going to have the best price/performance ever.
And by the way, stop saying 8800GT's in SLI is comparable to a GTX280, ITS NOT.

I already made a post in another thread regarding the GTX 280.
Nvidia doesn't expect the GTX 280 to sell like crazy, they are not "dumb" they make most of their money from the 8400GS in laptops anyway... They make the very best high performance card 1) because they can 2) All of the following generations mid-range to low-range cards are based on the high-end card's technology anyway, so it's win-win for nvidia.
If you can't afford the heavy premium for the best, don't complain.

"Wow, the misinformed posts in this thread *cough* *splutter*.
The GTX 260 and 280 are nVidia's latest high end graphics cards. The GPU is GT200, not G92. The new series is named "Graphics Tesla" (GTX).
The GTX280 is by far the most powerful single gpu graphics card to date. People seem to miss the point of this release.
Until now, the 8800GTX was still a very strong card as it was meant to be utilised at insanely high resolutions with massive amounts of AA. I compare the 8800GTX to a sledgehammer.
Yes, dual 8800GT is the better option for most of us out there, but if you have a 30" 2560x1600 monitor, before the release of the GTX280, the 8800GTX would still be your best option.
The G92 cards 8800GT, 8800GTS 512 and 9800GTX have a different target audience, whereas the 8800GTX and GTX280 have the same, the GTX 280 is being the new sledgehammer, replacing the 8800GTX.
It was never meant to be a best bang for buck card, considering it's whole idea was to have a minimal reduction of FPS while increasing resolution and that you would own a 30" 2560x1600 monitor to use it to it's potential, you wouldn't really care about the performance to price ratio, this is about having the very best.
For most of us gamers, we would either buy a 8800GT or a 8800GTS 512, they definately give you performance at a cheap price. But if any of you have read enough indepth benchmarks, you would know that the G92 that these cards are based on suffer A LOT when the AA is turned up, and any resolution above the 1680x1050 range.
The GTX 280 certainly deserves credit for being the most powerful single gpu card after the 8800GTX. Nvidia didn't expect huge sales from this launch, but as you may know. The following generation's midrange cards etc will all be based on the same technology."
