8600 GTS is an excellent mid-range card!

I recently stepped up from a 6150LE (I know, it sucks) to a 8600GTS and wow, what a difference. I know most of you have high-end cards like the 8800 series, but this was a more practicle solution to my problem (wife won't let me spend $500+ on my PC). I would love to have an 8800GTX, but it's just to far out of my price range. 8600GTS is a decent alternative. I can run most games that have come out in the past year or so at full settings, with hardly a drop in frame rate. There are a few stutters here and there, but nothing major.

Like I said, if you don't have a ton of money to spend on a new GPU, the 8600GTS (and to a little lesser extent, the 8600GT) make a great buy. Just wanted to share.

Indeed it is. Be happy. I also heard that 8600 should run Bioshock on high settings in 1280x1024 whit very good framerate in DX10.

I'm playing CSS with everything on High, Reflections set to all, 4xAA, 2xAF @ 1280x1024 and getting between 55-70 fps. Same with SIN Ep.1. SWAT 4 also runs at max settings smooth a butter at around 50-60 fps. I know these are old games, but that's still impressive!

bump the filtering to 16x, it wont lower the frames at all.

Where did you hear this?

There was interview of developer on Bioshock official website. The question was i think how good you could play game whit recommended settings (which 8600 is). The answer was that you should get very nice framerate, on high settings, in 1280x1024, or you could sacrifice high framerate for bigger resolution. I dont know how true it is but i belive it is true.

if u have the 8500GT, dont upgrade only to a 8800GTS at least, the 8500GT should run those games like mid high on 1024.

I don't have to superclocked version of the GTS, just the standard. But, yeah, these are great cards for the price the GT and GTS.

The clock speeds are faster. Here's a link to some comparisons.

Wouldn't the 8600 be better by default because it has DirextX10 capabilities, whereas the x1950pro doesn't? Sure, the x1950 pro might clock faster, but isn't DirectX10 reason enough to purchase the 8600 over it?

One thing I have found - NO offence ment to anyone - is that people on this forum make you think you need a 8800GTS before you can play any games on any kind of worth while quality. Especially me because I have never had a gaming card before my 9600pro, which I just got. For my new rig this fall, I am going with this. I won't be going over 1024x768 anyway, and I won't be getting vista for a while.

i got 8600gts that i overclock pretty high and i absolutely love it. havent run into any games that make it struggle. i play my games at 1440x900 and i can max oblivion and fear and hopefully everything else that comes out. sometimes i wish i saved up a little more for an 8800 just because im a tech whore, but i will upgrade at some point down the line. for now i definitely think i made the best 'bang for the buck' purchase... an 8600GTS and an AMD 64 X2 5000+... good stuff :)

What about the 2600pro? It does better than the 8500, but it doesn't do as good as the 8600. However, it is only $20 less than the 8600, but to a wife, being less than three digits means a lot.

OK, that is bad news... That board has integrated graphics and no AGP or PCI-E slot for a graphics card.

I freaking love my EVGA 8600gts. The nice thing is, I got it for about $40 cheaper than retail because of a MIR, and EVGA is going to give me full price for the step-up program. That means I can step up to an 8800gts soon and get one of those for like a hundred bucks more and that's all.

In the meantime, I've overclocked the 8600gts and it takes anything I throw at it and then some.

BY THE WAY, the 8600 hate on the net is silly. I think a lot of people were expecting it to be comparible to the 8800s, but this is simply an awesome mid-range card so that's unfair. If your're not going to be gaming at insanely high resoltions, then the 8600gts is more than capable of anything you need it to do. Until Crysis perhaps... hard to say about THAT one.

No, the 2600XT is a much better card for $15 more.

How did I miss the XT? :?

I must have mistaken it for an overpriced 2600pro. I think when I build my pc this fall, I will get the 8600gts or 2600xt instead of ax1650pro. I won't be doing DX10, but these are good cards either way for only $100.

I freaking love my EVGA 8600gts. The nice thing is, I got it for about $40 cheaper than retail because of a MIR, and EVGA is going to give me full price for the step-up program. That means I can step up to an 8800gts soon and get one of those for like a hundred bucks more and that's all.Xdrive
When you step up, you're trading the price you paid for your card (not full retail!) against the full retail price of the card they're selling, i.e. $300 for the 320MB and $400 for the 640MB. I do think that getting a MIR slips past the step-up program though, since they only want your initial invoice/receipt for verification - and MIR's don't show up there. :)
