Ok in my eyes the 640mb of ram *doubles* the speed of the card (im not too tech savvy obviously) can anyone shed some light on HOW much faster the 640mb is over the 320 is it marginal or huge?

It varies a lot depending on the game - Quake 4 is marginal, but Half Life 2 and Oblivion are much more, up to 40% difference in framerate. Also, newer games seem to suffer more.

Gamespot recently tested a 320mb card - you can find the article in the Tech area.

However, nobody knows how well these cards will run DX10 games, so I'm waiting before I buy a DX10 card.

It comes down on what resolution you are playing. At res lower than 1280x1024, theres virtually no difference between both the 320mb and 640mb. At res over 1600x1200, the 640mb clearly has an advantage. But it isn't anything too major(around 5-10 FPS at most).

you will only notice over 16x12, like others have said, also if the game utilizes the higher amount of RAM too.

The only reason I woud get a 640mb one over a 320mb one is because some games will utilize that extra ram. So the 320mb one is not going to look nearly as good.

you'll still have alot of headroom at that resolution with the 320meg version. it's possible that DX10 games could have bigger textures, but by the time DX10 is mainstream you could put the money u saved towards a much better dx10 card.

The XFX 8800gts 320mb has higher clock speeds than the 640mb version as long as you play in low resoulsion you wont notice a difference

why would it? Right now around 5% of games utilize more then 256mb. Doom3, Prey, Quake, FEAR, Oblivion, GRAW, Vegas, Everquest 2 are just some of the games that utilize 512mb. Many people run SLI 7900gt 256mb and run FEAR perfectly fine. A SLi 7900gt 512mb setup you would see a few frames more from at 12x10, but at 16x12 and higher, you will start to see the 512mb cards pull away.
