1: Why would the 8800GTS 512MB perform anywhere near the level of the 9800GX2? The 9800GX2 costs twice as much and is two 8800 cards sandwiched together. The 9800GTX only has a moderate lead over the 8800GTS 512MB. The only really new things it brings to the table are support for Tri-SLI and the requirement of an extra power connection. It's also going to be around slightly longer, so if you want to go SLI in the future this may prove to be the better choice.
If you're building this in early summer, don't even bother planning for the graphics card right now though. By the time you start getting parts together, odds are that neither the 8800GTS 512MB or the 9800GTX are going to be the cards to buy.

I think he meant the 9800GTX not the GX2. I recommend you getting the g92 instead of the gtx because the gts is only about 5fps or less slower than the gtx for a fraction of the price, but that's only if you overclock the gts
look, the LOWEST price for the g92 gts here in portugal is 205 euros (dont convert to dollars, or ul have a heart attack...), and the lowest price for the 9800 gtx is 253 euros (dont convert...), u think its its worth the difference?GTR2addict
nope , not really, 205euroes it's about 320$, the difference between the 2 you've mentioned is about 50euroes , doesnt really worth it, just make sure you'll get a good 8800GTS G92 brand like evga, xfx, bfg, pny

this is a good bet right? BFG 8800 GTS 512mb GDDR3 OC = 213 euros... dont want to go with asus (205 euros)... XD

yeh bfg for sure , dont go with asus
I have serious doubts about either card lasting 3 years from now. That will mean that an 8800GTX will last a massive 4.5 years.Just doesnt seem likely to me even if you SLI.Their is bound to be a game that exceeds the shader model requirement of these cards.

that's not what he asked :P and 3 years is really good..

I got to agree here. I have the 8800gts 512 and love it but there is no way it will last me 3 years. Now maybe if you play on low resolution and low settings for a year then maybe you'll get three years from it. I try to upgrade my video card every two years and it has worked out very well for me so far. Don't try to future prove your build because it just can't be done.
For your actually question, as of right now I would get the 8800gts. The difference in price is not worth the very small increase in FPS. A lot can change in two months though so I would keep your options open.
sooooo...... 9800 gtx is the way to go? dont worry bout the money, ive chose the other parts carefully, so this rig shouldnt go past ~1050$... no matter wich card i choose... and what card do u think will be "the card to get" in early summer? cuz i want a gfx card for AT LEAST 3 yrs with NO UPGRADING AT ALL, not even opening the case...GTR2addict
Then if you're not building this until this summer, I can definitely say that the HD4k series is shaping up to outperform the GeForce 8-series, as well as the current iteration of the 9-series.
