I have a 2 year old PC with a 7900 GS card that is dieing. I need to up grade. I was wondering for the next 6-8 months which card would be worth buying. I live in Japan so the cards are priced a bit high. I can get an over clocked 8800 GTS for 370 dollars or a 8600 for 200 dollars. Also with the 9600 coming out. Will the 8800 price drop? I heard horrible things about the 8600 but I just need a card for gaming this summer. I will get a new rig when the 8800 cards prices drop dramatically. Like I said before, I just need something to hold me over for the next 6-8 months... Plus with a little upgrade in graphics . What should I do?

Any 8800 GTS card is much much better than 8600 but if you are getting an 8800GTS make sure to get the 512MB unless you are getting some really good price on any other GTS.However if you are on a budget then i would get 8800GS or 8800GT.

In that sort of timeframe the 8600 would probably get you by and still give you at least medium graphic performace on higher up games (crysis). Which we all know still looks amazing. If you are willing to spend it, and dont want to have to upgrade again for another few years, the 8800 is the definite choice.

thats WAY to expencive you could get a GTX or a HD3870x2 for 350$

A GTS 512mb (G92) should be under 270$

First of all, i've nt seen any 3870x2 for 370$ so far even at newegg + MIR. Secondly, he already mentioned that he lives in JP and the prices are higher than US market, If UK/Europe is more expensive than US then what Asia should have ??

@ OS : If you can get 8800GTS (512mb) then you will be happy so much and you can even keep it to the new rig you might do at the summer but if you waste your 200$ on acrapp* 8600 then you'll be losing alot.

the 8600GT is a good card, but there are better cards out now since it was released. only get a 8600 if your constrained to a lower power PSU if not go with the HD3850/8800GS/9600GT

Or even an HD 3870... AMD will drop the prices again at US market for their 3xxx series. 3850 will be sold for 145$ and 3870 for 159$ so i think we have anew recommandtion here for mid~high end cards.

@ OP : yoyo mentioned agood point about the power/psu... If you dont have enough powersupply to handle 8800 then you need to get 8600 exceot you dont mind upgrading to better psu

The fact that your pc is two years old leads me to believe both of those cards will be severely bottlenecked by your cpu.

Thanks for the responses. I have a duo core processor 6300...will that really bottle neck the 8600 or 8800? Also I was going to get a new power supply if I did get the 8800 GTS.

Then, you wont have any problems with your CPU.
For the PSU manner, i cant really help you because i dont know what options are avalible to you at JP. So you might tell us the ones you can get and let us hlep you to get the best. Try toget one from reliable site (CoolerMaster, Antec, Silverstone, OCZ and many others that i cant remember at the moment)
