I have a Dell Inspiron 530 which unfortunately comes with only a 300W power supply (wish they listed this on the site, but anyway.) I just got an EVGA Geforce 8800GS which recommends a minimum 400W supply. Do you think it would be a bad idea to try to use it?

However I've heard that Dell often "underestimates" their power supplies and they can handle more than what's listed. I also read some reviews of the 8800GS which seem to show that it barely uses more power than an 8600GT (which this computer came with, and which worked perfectly for me.) There's an extremely detailed review of this 8800GS at http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GeForce_8800_GS/21.html

BTW here's what's drawing power from my 300W power supply: core 2 e6550 processor, one sata hard drive, DVDRW drive, usb mouse and keyboard, usb wireless network adapter, usb tv tuner, usb gamepad. Obviously the last two can be unplugged if it makes a difference.

So... any chance the 8800GS will work without damaging anything here? Or is this just not a good idea at all?

Also, I'd like to know if running near the maximum of a power supply's ability stresses it and does harm to it somehow. I assume that if the 8800GS worked, this would be running close to the 300W max at times. Is that harmful?

Looks like I might have teo go back to the 8600GT, just hoping there might be a way to use the new card. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well Dell under rates their power supplies so it should work. They ship 8800GTXs with 375W power supplies. Worst case you have random restarts and you have to buy a better PSU.

What are the rest of your specs?

An overclocked 8800GS consumes around 200-215wts at load and would. You could get a 3850, it consumes around 185-200 at load.

What are your stats for the PC and your PSUs amps on the 12v? Im sure the 8800GS doesnt push for large amounts of ampage, but nice to know. BTW he is right, a couple people in here were running 8800GTXs on 375wt PSUs frmo DELL. I think they were XPS models tho or higher end dimensions with GTX offerings.

it should be Stable even tough it recommend it only say so to avoid any possibility to have Brownout
guru3d as Say that 1000wats psu can run Tri-sli 280 GTX but it keep say recommend 1200-1400 WATS but the consummating is 750 wats so peopel complain what ah damn 1200 WATS THAT ALOT OF ELECTRICITY maybe.. but IT won't consume that much it will consume 800-850 with the 85 Silver plus % energy saving. so you get only wasting. 15% top. of electricity bill
example 800 wats + 15% = 920 WATS per hour for sli gaming it still alot but anyway it sometime worth it
so bascily it should be fine. but id recommend you to get a better psu the new one are more % energy saving and much better quality in most of case at higher wattage so anyway wish you good luck =) it should be fine
