To get rid of flawed cards that couldn't make it as 8800GT or 8800GTS G92 cards and make profit.
The 9600GT is expected to be around $169.
Not quite sure if it'll beat out the 9600GT though.. as the 9600GT does have 32 less SPs, though it does feature a newer architecture/core and a slightly larger memory bit interface.

what card do you have now?
if its a good card id say to keep it and wait for ATI's new 4000 series that is coming out in Q2 2008 im sure once ATI gets its hands on a 9 sereis card they will compare it and do what they can to make the 4000 series cards better IMHO

I've got a 7600GT that recently died on me, so I'm currently using an older rig with a P4 2.4GHz and a 6200.
I'm probably going to grab a 9600GT.

Your first point is right.
However, the 9600GT is not on a new architecture to G92. The 9600GT is based on G94, which is a derivative of G92, which in turn is a derivative of G80. G94, interestingly enough, features the same memory bus width as G92.
I have a amd athlon 3800+ dual 2.0 and a nvidia 8600gt xxx 256mb graphic card. Some day I'm not sure if it will be soon or not buy I'm going to get a different card then what I have and I'm aiming for a card under 200.00.
So if this 9600gt is only 170 or what ever then I may just wait until I see it in action or wait until the 4000 corme out. I'm in no big hurry to run out and get another card I can wait. I have waited this long.

Ah. Never really researched the Geforce 9 series since I wasn't particularly interested. =/
Go for the 8800 GS.
9600gt is already benchmarked...http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1 [...] index.html.. price maybe same to 8800gs but performance is greater than 8800gs.. and its a g94 chipsetraufin
That review is questionable. Half the SP's, a fraction of the of the ROP's and texture power of G92, yet it performs so closely with the 8800 GT?
9600GT isnt going to be that cheap because im sure that retailers will bump the prices the same way they did to 8800GT.SearchMaster
yeah that's what i m foreseeing... but after 2 or 3 weeks price will be go down and will come close to the msrp becoz i heard there's lots of supply in the way ..anyways that price made me scream!! a very good card in ~170 ...thats why i want to see more and more competition..its gr8 for the consumers like us who aren't willing to throw $250 for a card to game... btw i m not ethustic gamer :-) thats why i think like that... dont flame me for my word :-)

even it is not that powerful as 3870 ofcourse it will be very close .. and going with a 8800gs right now is a big loss.. becoz 8800gs is limited by its 192bit and have less video memory.. 9600gt will surely beat the 8800gs and will have almost the same price..8800gs is a limited version.. it will go out of market soon

I agree we'll have to wait and see multiple reviews in the next week or two.
My Best Buy already has some BFG 9600GT OCs, but they cost $230. Interestingly enough, that's the same price as the 8600GT and the 2600XT there. :okodex1717
Bestbuy that name suxs
After looking at the specs it seems pointless unlesss it is very very cheap.
When the 6600GT launched it was $200 or less, when the 7600GT launched it was $200 or less, hopefully the 9600GT will not continue this trend. I hope it'll be around $150.nVidiaGaMer
WOW!? 9 Series huh... still got a 6600, 3 generations behind and still kickin'
IMO if it's beter and cheaper get it otherwise I am looking at the 8800GS & HD3850! aaaarg! hard choice!!

lol, can you still ''kickin'' with this card with new games such as COD4 or even Bioschock :Pi think the 8800GT will beat the 9600GT
but wait for the benchmarks
im dying, from waiting
cause i want another 8800GTX for SLI but i want to wait for the 9800GTX to see some benchmarks, Lehman
I'm on the same boat as you although I'm probably going to end up with a 9800GTX instead of SLI 8800GTX's =]

You should definitely wait. You card still kicks major ass.Yup, I'm waiting on the 9800GTX because I've heard rumors that this beast at LEAST doubles the performance of an 8800GTX. Hopefully that's true, not to be mistaken with the 9800GX2 of course. Until then, I still have plenty of other games to play other than Crysis, (although I find myself always going back to Crysis again and again) to play until they release it and I will enjoy Crysis even more.
