I know the king of price/ performance is 8800GT but I have a gut feeling after a driver update that the 9600GT will either match or surpass 8800GT. Right now I have a HD3850 512mb but it isnt exacally giveing me the absolute best performance in all my games so I plan on a upgrade, also I am getting my money back because my friend wants onne but dosent have a credit card.
Highly unlikely even after driver updates the 9600GT will surpass the 8800GT's performance. Even matching the performance isn't really possible either.
And its also not like the 8800GT won't perform better as well with driver updates too.
Unless you can get a good price on the 3850 ($150 or more), I would just stick to what you have. That having been said, if you are thinking of upgrading you might as well go with an 8800GT. Until the prices of the 9600GT fall closer to $160, I don't think it offers as much bang for your buck as the 8800GT, which can currently be found for $200 after rebate.
I think Newegg currently is offering a promo code with the EVGA 9600GT Superclocked so that you could get it for $170 which may be worth looking into if you can't spare the extra $30.

Anyway, your eyes can't tell the difference between 40fps and 60 fps, so why bother

You could also overclock the 8800GT. Also, using the "your eye can not tell a difference" argument isn't valid, firstly because some human eyes actually can discern a difference (although not mine own I will admit), and secondly, a lot of modern/future day games are going to struggle to run on a 9600GT. It's not like you'll be consistenly getting 40FPS.
Thought I knew that anything 'bove 24fps is perceived to be smooth motion by human eyes.
And graphics cards are getting outdated every 6 months, so in another 2 months you might have something like 9800gt that'd beat the 8800gt hands-down. So the 8800gt isn't future-proof either
Plus who knows what Crytek and like-minded comps have up their sleeves and in their heads. So decide what u can realistically afford and go for it. Happy gaming

I agree that you shouldn't necessarily spend more money just to future-proof your PC, but it seems to me as if the 8800GT is a slightly better value. Plus, the TC probably wouldn't notice that much of a difference between a 3850 and a 9600GT in most games, the difference would be more noticeable with an 8800GT. If prices of the 9600GT went down another $20, I would completely agree with you.

Higher no. of SPs does not necessarily translate into higher perf. You need a wider memory bus and better overall architecture for that. Take, for example, the HD3850. It has a whopping 320 SPs but has lower perf than the 8800gt with the same memory bus.
HD3850 512MB is still a good card.What resolution are you trying to play with it that you are unhappy?
Anyways yes 8800GT is quite a bit better than the 3850 521MB but IMO not worth upgrading to but that's probably just me as everybody's views on how much performance increase makes an upgrade worth it will be different.
If anything i would look into the 512MB 8800GTS which is going for around $250 with rebates.The bigger the performance jump you get from the 3850 the more chances that you will feel that your upgrade was worth it.

I hate to tell you that with Nvidia having more SP's means more performance, The 9600GT has the same bandwidth as the 8800GT and has a higher standard clock speeds this being said the 8800GT has 112 Vs 64 of the 9600GT.
What about getting the evga 9600GT and keeping it for the step up program to change it for the upcoming 9800, you would probably have some more money by then and the 9600GT is good enough for now.

I can see a diffrence between 40-60 fps in games. Thats one of the reasons I played crysis with major graphic dehancements. BTW I sold my HD3850 for $195 so I broke about even plus I got my 8800GT =) but I have to wait until wednesday or thirsday for it to arrive =(. How hot is this card? should I buy an aftermarket cooler?

no I have need for speed pro street, COD4, and a whole bunch of other games that I wasent getting max performance out of. I ran tests to see what held my pc back in games and it seems my graphic card was at fault, so I bought the 8800GT knowing I got a AWESOME deal.

Because for most games,you should be getting high EASY in CoD4,Need for speed can't comment on,but other games like Bioshock,UT3,etc you should be getting max if you play those games.
I think it was because of lots of AA but I want to play my games at 1600x1200 with AA so the hd 3850 wasnt my kind of card though I was happy with it. Its just that I wanted the 8800GT more then what I had and I am glad I did what I did. I will not upgrade my card though until g100 cards come out.

Its not a question of whether it will or won't .Fact is that it does at high settings at sane resolutions. Please read a few reviews at least before trashing everything.
Anyway, considering the current prices, the guy did the right thing in getting the 8800gt. 9600gt seems pretty pointless at its current pricepoint
