Just wait. I have an 8800gt and Im very happy with it. Overclock that sucker and save up for the 4870x2 or the GTX 260 Core 216 Black Edition when the prices come down. Its not worth it when you can just take that money, add a little to it in a few months and get an amazing card.

hd4850 kicks 8800gt azz by far! And its just 200 worth. It peforms 87% faster than 9600gt according to lab tests.

I'm 90% sure you are confusing the hd4850 with the hd4870 - which kicks butt.....but the 4850 just isn't enough of an upgrade to justify the price. If you could sell your 8800GT for some kind of compensation maybe

, HD4850 will be enough for you

It depends upon your requierment. At what resolution you play games? With AA on or Off? Then decide which one to buy. In my case, I have Samsung 19" wide screen LCD with native resolution 1440x900. I have ATi 4850 @ 512mb GDDR3. I play every games in native resolution. Graphics settings generally kept at highest settings but AA and AF is needed to adjust. In my opinion, If you have more than 19" display go for HD4870. If you've got upto 19" display , HD4850 will be suffice.

It will be a upgrade but not a significant upgrade. I swapped my 8800gs for 4850. I saw probably a 30% increase in performance in Fallout 3 and some other games. So from a 8800gt to 4850 your looking at probably around 15% increase in performance. And probably a lot less than that in Crysis. It's worth it if you can trade your own card in and get credit on the 4850.. But it's not worth shelling out full buck for it.

I would definitely not upgrade if you already have a 8800 GT. Wait until something better comes out and it's actually worth upgrading. ''Downgrade'' the settings to high and live with it for a while.

4850 is nice, I upgraded from a 7900 about two months ago and the difference is amazing. However, as others have said, going from an 8800 to a 4850 isn't going to make a huge difference. The 4870 would be a nice improvement though if you can afford it.

HD4850 is a good card, perhaps very good in terms of price vs performance criteria but hd4870 is a crazy monster. Go for it without a doubt. :)
