I think you can get away with that GTS 250 without needing a new power supply. The GTS 250 has REALLY LOW POWER CONSUMPTION. Its on the smaller die and from test results GTS 250 is only bout 30 watts more idle then a 8800 gt. (8800 gt idles around 120 and load 220 or so gts 250 is 150 idle 270 load or so) Prob will depend on what else you have in your system. It would prob be your best choice without needing a new power supply. I have a GTS 250 and with a 500 watt power supply it does not have any problems. Only thing is that Ii keep my computer on bare minimum with 1 dvd drive, 1 hd, vid card, 2 sticks of ram, and a e7400 processor. I say you could escape with that 400 watt and be ok with this card. As for improvement its prob only gonna getcha 10% or so. GTS 250 = 9800 gtx just on a smaller die, lower temps and less power consumption. If you can find one for around 80 dollars like I did then its prob worth it. If normal price then no reason to.

Save your money.

If you have a Core 2 and an 8800 card (or better) it seems like you're pretty much set this generation.

even if you can go up to 8GB there is no fps increase in game higher then 2fps in average for only 3 game or so that i heard and those 3 game would be GTA IV With mods & Cryisis & Far Cry 2 and that was going for like only a small 1-2 FPS gain it don't even worth to mention to get 6GB or 8GB
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2008/07/08/is-more-memory-better/5

You may not know but A Game is all about FPS. the higher it get the better you get.. : use Fraps And Tell us you'r monitor resolution but it probabely a 1680x1050 or 1280x1024 based from Statistic of internet user

we can help you to find the perfect match for upgrade but 250GTS is Like a Rip-off if you want to get rip-off Fine with you go with it

A GPU would Dramaticly change those fps but no that mucht from a 250GTS Because you see 250GTS is a Rebranded 9800GTX+ which is a little boost of 8800GTX and we mostly know from 8800GTS 512MB G92 there isn't much a difference with 8800GTX

if you get something or You have a money budget think about it and where you live if in usa wait HD5750 or HD5770 for 125-150$US : it release soon

or If you can't wait just buy right now a 260GTX159$ / HD4870 1GB144.99$Free Shipping

else Stick With what you got and harvest money to buy someting when you got the money don't rush over thing for a small 7-10% Increase when you can get a +50% to 125% increase for 35-50$ more

If you don't belive those information here are benchmark http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2009/10/13/amd-ati-radeon-hd-5770-review/8 you can cleary See there a small dif of 8800GT To HD4850 and 250GTS is on another benchmark

Good to know you envisage someting better then 250GTS to max id like to know ur Current Processor it may help and well if you want High Quality gaming at 1080P you can settle for a 550-750W PSU from 54.99$ to 100$ it should power up anything in future and present

and If you wan to max out newest game That release By 2010 well i suggest you to harvest extra money for a HD5850 / HD5870 with that ud game without prob at 1920x1080 which is almost same as 1920x1200 since both would consume same fps i think so

and yeah NSR34GTR it the 2nd time you say i'm back and both time i was Away for 2-3 day Of Forum ;)

as for Fraps it to calculate Via Yellow Number Going from top Right&left to Bottom Right / Left Which say what you get such as 25-30-45-90fps

60 fps & higher - Excelent average FPS won't lag to you in most of time
55-50FPS> Very Good Experiance
45-35 FPS - playable but lagspike guaranted
30-25fps - barely playable
15-20fps - Prepare to lag it fun
5FPS - I'm amazed ur pc didnt' shutdown the application.

once you get the Average FPS data then you tell us Setup you may have used such as like texture : Very High(max) : Shadow High : AA 2X to 8X usally : AF alway 16X i alway gamed at 16X AF

But Based from my benchmark Knowledge pretty much anything the power of 285GTX / 4890 1GB would end up being a not optimal experience for 1920x1080 so it require power.. the 1920x1080 / 1920x1200

but still you may being able to afford to max that stuff with a 260GTX Equivalent for most of game

But It doesn't mean you can't just go on and put it at 1680x1050 or 1600x1200 tough if you got good eye and used to look at pixel you'd see it downgrade the pixel just as i did notice from 1280x1024 to 1024x780 on elder Scroll 3 Morrowind back to 2003 : i notice anything lol

I would get a HD 4890 and a Corsair 650TX, should be around $250. Or save a bit more and get a HD 5850.

yeah i tough so as well that a good option but if he can save a bit more for HD5850 which is almost similarly as 4850x2 in several benchmark with current ATI Radeon CCC driver then he would be good to go for almost 3 year at 1920x1080 unless game develop exponentially fast as the replicator on stargate SG1 & Stargate Atlantis ;)

i sure do know alot Topic Creator (TC) :P But I dont really brag about it lol but My knowledge isn't that hard to obtain I belive so what may sound to you very impressive is iv learn such knowledge in only 3 year and iv only started to get serious how benchmark work by 2008 I learn progressively every day

you too will be able if you put as much effort as i did i learn fast tough people claim my speed to both read & write is high so it help to learn faster & think faster if you start Read Benchmark and gather information with other people around forum here you won't believe how a huge step you could make in only a Week of reading

it that shocking that you highly would become a professional Personal pc builder in few day :P as few people i helped that knew nothing how you build a pc and few day after they came with lot of Question and learned so fast and become part of the Helping Support of the PC hardware Discussion of Gamespot

Tough i say i'm good at what i do and that im fast and i know lot of stuff : but my self really don't know that much compare to those Wizard who Write Those Detailed Articles on Xbits lab / The Inquirer / anandtech / Bright side of news and a bunch of friend on the custom pc build union & here

well so if you think you wish to know what i know even since you think it cool even if it by 1/3 of what i know start by learn about benchmark and il give you url for those : tech power up : bit-tech : Guru3D : Anandtech : Xbits lab from there you should have a vast knowledge of pc and learn as i did if you have question you can add me via any IMS / Email / PM on gamespot / here / the custom pc build union

as of now perhaps there enough off-topic and if you need help i will try to help you with you'r GPU / PSU purchase and in future.. PC-build and if you learn from benchmark you'r next pc will have Great power for buck if you're still running low on money by there ;) hopefully you learned some if you think i'm cool

isn't the gts 250 a rebranded 9800gtx? so in other words not worth it. go for a 275 or 285 if you want an upgrade.

Like HEAVY movie editing or HEAVY photoshop'ing

exactly, my 4gb is right on the limit when it comes to 3d modeling. around 3.2gb used in my maya scene with photoshop open and that goes up to 3.8gb when rendering and has to find the memory from the cached ram.
