I'm using Crysis as a next gen dx10 benchmark. I can only play up to 1280x1024 res on my 19inch flat panel.

If I get a low range core-duo, is the 8800gts 320mb version going to be man enough to play this sort of game?

What have they been running the Crysis demonstrations on? Should I wait it out for another 6 months and get a somewhat faster cpu and gpu?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

if you have a c2d e6300 with a 8800gts 320mb you should be fine to play Crysis.

In benchmarks, it's been found that the 8800GTS 320MB versions have trouble when you start running games at or above 1600x1200 due to video memory limitations. If you are going to run at 1280x1024, then there should be no difference for you between the 8800GTS 320MB version and the normal 640MB version.

What are your other specs? CPU and RAM plays a part in how good will Crysis run on your PC. But if you have something like an e6300(non-OCed), 2GB of RAM, you should be fine running near max settings on 1280x1024.

Crysis requires a 7900GT for optimum performance. So you do the math whether 8800 can run it or not.

Where did you hear that 7900GT is optimum ? although it's likely.

In that case the 8800GTS 320MB will run crysis on high-max settings no problem.

Yes that video card will do just great for what you have.

I did some research since I was considering this card and I dont think 320 will be enough for future games. In many benchmarks its the level of aa that makes a bigger difference than resolution. At 1280 you need 4x to get rid of the jaggies completely.

The 320mb will most likely cause stuttering at max details in Crysis no matter the res.

Here are some benchmarks. Keep in mind that even though some are even, the 320mb card is probably not as smooth as the 640.

Sorry to say that you're wrong. at the res he will be running, it won't matter which version he gets.

Agreed. The 640mb will only really have a proper advantage at 1600*1200 and above.

That's what I thought. Because they said in an interview that a single 7800GTX would max it out at 1024*768.

Yeah so do I. If that is true, then a lot of people will be able to enjoy Crysis.

hoping an 8600 ultra will do the job at 1280 times 1024 near max.

Then why do some of those benchmarks have up to a 15fps difference at 1280 between the 320 and 640mb with 4xaa? If he wants jagged edge free gaming the 320mb will not suffice in future games.

Guru 3d says: There's another thing to keep in mind though, upcoming games that require massive amounts of texture memory can be an issue. A good example in our test run was GRAW; the GTS 640 MB model performed way better on all levels thanks to the fact it had enough memory. With upcoming DX10 titles like Crysis I'm confident that a larger framebuffer will really start to matter, a 512Mb graphics card would have been the way to go here.

Tweaktown What is interesting though is that it’s obvious that the extra memory does make a difference in certain areas and with such texture driven and highly intensive games like Crysis coming out soon, the more onboard VGA memory the merrier.

Exactly,
While right now it may only make a difference at high resolution, more frame buffer will be needed for future games even at lower resolutions, as it has always been. While I am sure the 8800gts 320MB version will definitely run crysis, I don't think it will be as well as the 640MB version. Take one look at that game and tell me it's not going to need more frame buffer than games nowadays.

Ok I'm going to hold off until quad cores bring down the price of the faster core duos and the 8900 and R600 series drop the price of the 8800 gtx. Basically I'm trying to achieve what I did with my last pc an athlon xp 6600gt- that had real lasting performance (3-4 years). Thanks for all of your advice guys.
