Is that card meant to be played at high with a resolution of 1280 by 1024 and lower??

And the 640mb version to 1440 by 900 and up?

I wouldnt draw such a hard, fast rule between them like that. At anything under 1650x1400, the 320MB will do just fine. The 640 may do a little better at the higher end, but at 1440 and 1280, the difference isnt even worth worrying about.

The 320 will be good for you all the way up to 1680x1050. At 1680x1050 you need to start considering a 640. Although there is no point in getting a 640, as the 2900XT is only $40 more and performs much better.

Thge difference between the 320 and 640 MB version is in the order of 1-2 fps in most games at 1600*1200.

If you don't mind the very noisey fan and increased power usage, the 2900xt is better. I went for the 8800gts 640 becuase it's almost silent!!

Doesn't Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey use 512MB VRAM is you want to play them on "Ultra" settings?

If i'm correct, wouldn't it be better to get the 640MB card even if you are playing @ 1280x1024.

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

U don't need a 640 MB for normal applications. As far as I know, there's no application that needs more than 320MB of VRAM

I can play quake 4 at Ultra setting with the 8800 gts 320mb at 1280 * 1024 at 60+ fps so it cant take more than 320mb at that resolution.

It just means a given level can contain up to 500 MB of uncompressed textures. Any given scene only uses 1/10th of those textures. The unused textures can be swapped between the video ram and the main memory. If you don't have enough video ram and/or a slower PC, this swapping causes slowdowns.

Any modern gaming PC can run Doom 3 at ultra settings without a hitch these days.

the 320mb version is a good card even at 1920 res, it only trails the 640 version by 1-3 frames.
