I'm going to upgrade my rig, and I was thinking about getting the gpu first.

I'm switching my old 7900gt256mb with a 8800gts640mb

will I notice any big performance increase?

my current specs:

amd athlon 3800+ 64 bit single core

asrock sli mobo

2 gigs of ddr1 ram

370watt power, I'm changing to a 600w when I get the 8800gts

The rest of your setup is going to bottleneck your performance. There will be some performance increase, but you won't be getting the most out of your card.

it will max out stalker but all the eye candy has to be stopped at 1600 above res.

at 1024 and 1280 , it will run smooth or just stick to your 7900.

newer games run on dx 9 too.

wait for 9800 but then ur entire setup will bottleneck the performance so its better u get a 8800 gts on ur current setup.

or else save and upgrade later this year

I had a similar computer (4600+, 7900gt) and went up to an 8800gts 320mb. I would NOT do it again.. it's a waste without having a better processor.
