All right, I've got a fairly sweet rig set up:

Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 @ 2.8ghz (overclocked)

2gb DDR2 PC6400 A-DATA (5-5-5-18)

300gb 7200rpm HDD (SATA)

Asus P5N-E SLI Motherboard

BFG Geforce 7950GT OC 512mb PCI-E

Antec 900 Case

Now... I have an opportunity to upgrade to the Geforce 8800GTS 320mb Superclocked edition... But I'm wondering if paying roughly $100 more is warranted. Now I know the 8800 is a force to be reckoned with, but if the one I'm planning on buying isn't that much better than the 7950 I've got now, I don't see why I should upgrade. The only reason I wanna upgrade is so that I can play games without worrying about choking or low FPS. My 7950 has been great, but newer games aren't fairing too well (Call of Duty 4 Demo, for instance). CoD4 demo runs at 1024x768 everything maxed out on an average of 30FPS (but it's pretty laggy to me). This FPS will dip down to like 20 or 16 at times. The game is still very playable... but being a performance buff, I want much smoother gameplay =3

So... essentially I'm asking you folks if the upgrade to the 8800GTS is worth it.

Avg. FPSs @ very high or max settings:

Cod4 Demo - 30

Timeshift Demo - 30

BF2142 - 95

FEAR - 40

Guild Wars - 50

CnC3 Tiberium Wars - 30

Hitman Blood Money - 60

BF2 - 100

Team Fortress 2 - 30

Portal - 30

Half-Life 2 - 50

Sims 2 - 60

Bioshock - 25

Rainbow Six Vegas - 25

I've got a simialr set-up, but with an E6750, my 8800gts runs HL2 at well over 150fps, I ran the cod4 demo on max, texture details on extra at 1440x900 with barely a hitch (except for the first 30 secs)I've ony got 1 gig of RAM atm because one of mine died, but will be replaced for free :)

I'd say it's a great card considering it is realtively cheap

Wait for the 29 of oct and grab a 8800GT. It will cost $150-250 and outperform the 8800gts 320.

I'd wait until the new high-end cards (The 9800's) to come out, that 7950GT is still a decent card.

Wow... looked up specs for 9800... it's gonna be a damn great card... but even the cheaper $400 one is quite out of my price range haha. Though... I guess I could just sell something else I own to cover that cost...

But I don't think I'm going to look into a 9800 any time soon... I've only got a 550w power supply... or was it 500? don't remember.

Though mebe I can use that... step up program they have? So confused! ARGH! you made my binary decision into a trinary one!

500W is enough as long as you have at least around 30-35A on the 12V rail, but if you really want something thats quite a bit better than your 7950GT NOW,get HD 2900Pro,performance surpassing 8800GTS in most cases.

Well either way... I've got a buyer for my 7950gt so... can't let him down... so at this point I guess I'm stuck buying the 8800gts (i cant find complete specs on the 2900 or know whether or not it's gonna be compatible w/ my nvidia chipset mobo).

I guess the question is at this point... when's the 9800 coming out... and if it'll be eligble for eVGA's step-up program.

WTF? ALL ATI cards WILL work with NVIDIA chipsets, and the opposite is true as well.

9800's come out next year, and the HD 2900Pro specs are here: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=536&card2=518

oh... well... technology advances so quickly these days... so hard to keep up ^_^;; hehe.....

well I think I'm going to grab a 9800 when it comes out... but for now I've purchased the 8800gts (for any of you who still care haha). Hopefully the 9800 will be released by eVGA within the 90 days of their step-up program.

Hmmm..

Is it possible to use the Step-Up Program 3 times in a row? Like say for example: I buy an 8600Gt, then trade it in for an 8800GT. Can I trade in the 8800GT later as well????

In all due honesty, wait a few more months for the mid-range G90 cards. Even now, the G80 cards are struggling on high-end games.

But yes, the 8800 GTS 320mb is a devine card, a lot cheaper than the 640mb version and NO difference if you dont want to play on 4000x3000 resolution:P

Well, I've already decided to get the 8800gts. I've been drooling over the specs for the G92 (Geforce 9800) since I found out about this morning and I'm definitely going to take advantage of EVGA's Step-Up program (provided the 9800 comes out in the next 3 months... and provided that EVGA does indeed manufacture a 9800GTS).

I've sold my 7950gt to a friend to offset the cost of the 8800 (friend needed a card that could run CoD4 anyway). I hope the 8800GTS lives up to everything I've heard and read about it. Thanks for all who took an interest in my problem.

I guess this thread is now a discussion about the sexy new Geforce 9800?

Some specs I found on the first page of Google search:

  • Chip Technical process : 65- nm
  • More than one billion transistors (681 mln. in G80, on which is built GeForce 8800 GTX)
  • Performance is more than 1 TFLOPS (trillion of operations with the floating point per second, in 8800 GTX this value is equal to 520 GFLOPS)
  • 512- bit memory system bus (384 bits in G80)
  • UP To 1024 mb memoryGDDR4
  • Support directX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.0
  • eDRAM memory as buffer, that ensures free 4- multiple anti-Aliasing (used now in gamingconsoles)
  • Built-in audio chip with HDMI
  • Improved algorithms AA and AF

Apparantly, the beast is going to be at least twice as fast and powerful as the 8800GTX and will run much cooler and quieter due to reduced power consumption.

I really damn hope EVGA will manufacture this card! XD
