How much better is the 8800M GTX than the 8600M GT? Are the two cards similar quality graphics or how much better is the 8800. Does anyone have any comparison shots? That would be great
thanks for advice

An 8800M is much better than any 8700M or 8600M. The only object to that is obviously, price. Notebook manufacturers/resellers will sodomize your ass coming and going before even letting you see a notebook equipped with one, much less let you buy one. That's been the case with basically any notebook with any kind of high-end graphics silicon for the past twenty years now.codezer0
LOL, this is signature material man :D
yeah well if the difference between the two is so great, maybe its worth it for the extra couple hundred bucks. only a few laptops offer the 8800M GTX though..and the only one reasonably lightweight enough is the alienware m15x..anyone know anything about that system?Koralanyes its really worth the extra money espically since almost all laptops don't allow you to upgrade the gpu and as for the alienware im not to sure ill look into it

That's not entirely true.
i can get a Dell 1730 with Dual 8800M GTX for a little over AU$3000 think thats round 2800 US dollars
is this good? it has also
T9300
2x 160 gig HDD 7200rpm
2 gig RAM
8X max DVD+/-RW
is this good??
im gonna take to school and stuff, but i also have a gamin computer already and this is probably better than my PC cause mine has single GTX but this has 2
Lehman
If you're just taking it to school and stuff, I wouldn't spend too much. Pick up a laptop with even one GTX and spend the rest on upgrading your desktop.
Just TRY and find a notebook with a high-end GPU that isn't selling for $2000+. Or think about trying to find one even a year ago. You couldn't. You always had to settle for some $4000+ cement block of a notebook and then pay a $500+ upgrade fee to even have said chip in it. Even now, it's next to impossible to find any real selection of notebooks employing SLi with even mid-grade GPU's. and those that do, charge insane premiums for it.That's not entirely true.

And if you want a warranty worth a damn, it still puts you over $2k with sales tax, unless you're lucky enough to live in a state that does not charge such a tax. Gateway's website also does not even acknowledge the P6831's existence. And you're going to be around $2000 anyway after upgrading the warranty and paying for shipping (and applicable tax). Last time I had checked for that 6831FX @ Best Buy, they had it at $1249 for all of one week. And the week right after, they raised the price to $1699 + $399 for a two-year service plan. :cry:Gateway P-6831FX

You don't need an extended warranty, and you don't have to pay shipping if you just walk into the store...

its still a gateway, not that they are terrible, but they arent exactly creme of the crop
You ever had a Gateway computer? You will want that warranty when their **** falls apart on you. Not much good going into a store when they repeatedly never have any, and charge way more in the store than they do on their web page for whatever reason. You don't need an extended warranty, and you don't have to pay shipping if you just walk into the store...

its on backorder you can't buy it not to mention the price will raise highly when it does get back in stockI think you all missed the point I was trying to make. Look beyond the Gateway P-6831FX. Hell, look at Gateway's own lineup online. Before you can even click "buy now", their baseline P-series FX model will end up greater than $2k by the time you add the warranty, shipping (and applicable tax). Laptop manufacturers have a pathological hatred for high-end graphics. Sony will positively refuse to sell a notebook with anything higher than an 8400M GS GPU in it (if the recent trip to the Sony Style store I had is to be believed). lenovo will absolutely NOT make a notebook with a GPU faster than an 8600M, assuming they even make one at all. Dell won't even sell a notebook with an 8800 series except for their top-end (and ridiculously overpriced) XPS 1730 model. Yes, it's got a PhysX PPU which is nice, but there's no reason I should have to spend $3000+ just to get even ONE 8800 GPU. Worst still, ATi hasn't made any high-end mobile silicon in ages now. Yes, they claim to have a mobility X1800, but even when that was brand new, it was effectively a paper launch, with only the XPS 2010 actually receiving it in any real quantity. Everyone else was left SOL. They've certainly not even tried to make even an HD 3850 mobility, or seem all that concerned to try and win back some of the mobile GPU market share they previously dominated in. As mastershake also stated, Best Buy fluctuates the prices a LOT. it started out at $1350, then $1250... then went up to $1700 (and raised the price of their service plan). Now it's showing a price of $1350, but being on backorder. And I agree, it will most certainly jack up as soon as they get any in stock again. And even more for those stores that actually have some on-hand. I consider the Gateway P-Series FX to be a fluke... because nearly every other notebook out there with a high-end piece of silicon (in this case, the 8800M series) retails for much, much more. And unless they can get a ton of people to buy into it, notebook manufacturers won't be adjusting their offerings to even come close to matching, on specs or on price. In a way, I was hoping for Vista to be the kick in the pants that notebook manufacturers would need to get them off their high horse and make some notebooks with GPU's worth using. But even with the needs for Aero, they continue to drag their feet, much to my frustration.Gateway P-6831FX at Best Buy
