So over the last month or so new builds created are based on 8 gigs of ram.Though more ram=more responsive PC, but hardly most games require 4-6gb at max, I reckon ( I may be wrong on that though).

So my qustion to you guys is having 8 gb of ram is absolutely essential ? Which games benefit most from this? If substantial amount of games do, then I will consider returning my 2x2 gb kit.You see I recently purchased a 2x2gb kit to get to 4gb from 2gb.I'll return that and throw in little xtra cash to get a 2x4gb kit if U guys say that will be right.

no its a abd idea.. at msot a gmaing system needs is 6gb ram.. and no games would really use even that.. in every case i can think of from 6-8gb ram you see 0 preformance gain and in a few select cases (crysis: warhead, farcry 2, WiC, & dow2 come to mind) you in fact would be loosing .5-3 fps @ certain resolutions... (basically its 1680 x 1200 or up)

you get 8gb or mroe if you have moeny to burn or your doing somehting on the side like say virtual machines, or high end photoshop, or 2d/3d editiong or running a mail server.. not gaming

which would be wy windows server compliments up to 128gb ram ahahaha

8GBs is not essential, but it wouldn't hurt either. I have 6GB of ram and certainly notice a difference from 4GB. I have two monitors running though and always have a music programs, vent, and browsers running and often alt+tab while in games. The Alt+Tabbing is faster while minimizing and maximizing games. I don't notice an improvement in performance like frames per second, but being able to alt+tab faster was worth it alone.

Get 8GB, 4GB is just barely enough for today's games. Typically I see 80% RAM use with my 2x2GB.

do you need it? no but you can never have to much ram. most games will run ok on 2gb ram with 4gb being the sweet spot. 8gb or more lets you open up tones of photoshop images with no problem. try opening 200 2k images with 2-4gb ram.

come to think of it the 4gb the uni computers have was not even enough to open my complex 3d scene with lots of high res textures in it.

just adding my 2 cents...

the price difference between 6 8 and 12 gigs of ram should not be an issue, the difference comes when you go higher than that

get 8gigs

you can reuse them to make your next system in 3 years time

good ram doesn't go bad from use so easily

IMHO 8GB RAM might not be any good for much longer. Give it a couple'o years and that'll be your average home PC.

I am thinking of sticking with the 4gb sticks 4 now as I suspect 1600ghz DDR3 would not be around say for 2 more years.Who knows we might be discussing DDr4 as early as mid-2012? So the idea of spending too much on 8gb Ddr3 now kit may backfire?

Yeah rams endure but the DDR standards change all too frequently. That's what keep me confused while doing memory upgrades.Like i bought 512x2gb's of DDr400 wid a hefty price tag back in Sep 2004 and thought they would be good investments. But then out of nowhere they brought out DDR2 533 for Intel based sytems in 2005.I was kinda stumped so moved on to an Athlon based sytem on my next upgrade as they still used DDR400's at best.

Even when DDR4 comes out DDR3 will still be relevant. I'm using DDR2 and there's virtually no difference in performance between DDR2 and DDR3. The prices are low enough that you might as well get enough of it, and if you're really concerned when DDR4 arrives just sell the DDR3 on eBay, someone WILL buy it. Ram prices are so low I don't see how this is even a big issue. Just snatch some up and stop over thinking.

Actually I am too using DDr2 in my older system (Corsair XMS 2 DDr21066) and could not agree more with your comment on DDR2/DDR3 performance difference or better....the lack of it !

Lol yes,I was overthinking........so just bit the bullet and returned the 4gb kit for Corsiar Vengeance 8gb 9-9-9-24.

With so much RAM being shared with videocards by Win7, and games getting more and more complex, I would go ahead and get 8GB if I was building a new PC.. 4GB is fine for now though...

Unless you plan on doing a bunch of multitasking/alt-tabbing while gaming or heavy photoshop-type work, 4GB is fine. 8GB is obviously better, but it's still a touch too expensive to be a "must have".
