tbh i think buying a new rig would be the best thing to do because you will have to change literally everything in there.

If you have a 9 year old computer that works, don't fool with it too much. If you have a friend with some spare (compatible) memory sticks just layin' around, talk him/her out of them and install them if you have the slots. I wouldn't invest any money in it though. Aside from maxing out the memory, nothing you do to it will make it run current apps any better...if at all. The best suggestion I can recommend is regular maintenance. Defrag the hard drive. Clean the inside of the case, heatsinks, fans, etc. Clean the crap out of your system startup...basic stuff. Meanwhile, start saving for a newer system. Even a $400 Walmart special is light-years ahead of the best 9 year old rig.

You've got a year on me. Use CCleaner, defrag the system considering you have 15% free HDD space.. Even still, defrag (I have under 1GB and I defrag!). Delete old stuff you'll never use again, use ad-aware. Go to start, run, type in "msconfig" and turn off all startup programs you don't need; don't uncheck anything you don't know what it is.

Your money is well spent in getting a new computer (perferably building it).. How fast is your cpu? 400mhz?

Not that old I'd think. Mine is 1.7GHz (Jan 2000).

But anyway, I also meant to add, upgrade like people are saying. That's if you want to do more than simple games, internet, chat, etc. I don't think you should add onto your computer but just get rid of it all together.. that's what I'm doing. Good riddance. But, it did last me this long.

1.7 GHz in 2000? My best PC is from 2002, and it only has an Athlon XP 1800+(1.53 GHz actual clock speed, but comparable to a 1.8 GHz P4)! Maybe this system is significantly lower-end than I thought for the timeframe. Anyway, I would suggest that you defrag, get rid of unused software, and perhaps even re-format and re-install your OS of choice(this dramatically speeded up Windows 2000 boot-up times on an old K6-2 350 setup I have lying around). Even then, though, the underlying hardware is still too weak for modern apps, so don't expect major speed increases without buying a new PC.

more ram if you have the room and a low end video card would help it out.

i had a amd duron 1300 before bought my dual core, and i had over a gig of ram and a geforce 5200 and i could play low end games with it just fine, so older pcs are still usable depending on what you do with them

Slot 1 Penium 3, with one of those honkin' big heatsinks that were the size of a Volkswagen? Probably a maximum SDRAM memory limit of 1GB, or maybe as little as 512mb. Still, not super slow. I had visions of a 266Mhz Pent 2 in mind. When you do get a newer rig, keep this one as a backup system. You wouldn't get too much for it if you sold it, but is plenty fast enough to surf the web, or run office apps. What version of Windows is installed? 98, or 98SE?
