Basically i have a friend who want to upgrade his video card to play STALKER (he currently has a 6600GS). He has 2GB's RAM and a pentium 4 @ 3.2Ghz. I was going to suggest a 9600GSO mainly because nothing comes close to it in that price range, now i know there maybe a small bottleneck in some games but i think its worth the money seeing as its so cheap.

What would you suggest?

I highly recommend a CPU upgrade. Those Pentium 4s run like doodoo in today's games. Get an E8400. It only costs $189 including free shipping= http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

I don't know about "nothing comes close" since all it is, is a renamed 8800gs for a tad less. I would get it since the pentium 4 won't be that big of a bottleneck with most games as most would think but it will have to be upgraded sometime soon.

well it will be a significant upgrade but his cpu will bottleneck it. if his mob supports 800-1066mhz fsb he should get a e4500 or e7200, it will make a big difference in cpu demanding games like stalker

He clearly posted a link to a UK website so newegg is pointless and we don't even know if his motherboard can even support core 2 duos, let alone wolfdale's

An e7200 would be perfect if his mobo supports it to go along with the gpu.

About requirements for running the graphics cards are different from games or programs with a cpu. That P4 is more than enough to run even a 8800GTS, What happens is that the program or game that requires a highend cpu to run it which in turn causes low performance. But if you grab a game that a P4 is more then enough to run it, it isnt slowing down the graphics card at all. People need to stop saying o that cpu or graphics card will "bottleneck"(which this word is used to much) the certain part of the Pc in most cases they wont if the Pc in general is up to date. Yes a certian part can contriube to lower performance overall if the game or program needs something better. But in all like this P4 and a 9600GS they wont be a bottleneck each other, only the program or game will decide on what causes the slow down. Thats I have to say about that.

£70.49 Inc VAT sounds good to me! :)

I would not worry about "bottlenecking". There is always something in your system that slows things down.

It does take a 6 pin PCIe power connector cable from the power supply unit, so your friend will need to consider that. I don't know if that graphics card has the power cable adapter included.

Thanks for all the replies guys :)

Basically upgrading the CPU is not really an option seeing as the guy is a student thus he has not much money. Also as long as the 9600GSO does give a performance jump he will be happy.
