I can get both options for around the same price (GX2 a bit cheaper,) but I am wondering is there a difference in performance?

Just get 2 8800GTS's you wont wont even tell the difference between a 9800GX2 or 2 9800GTX because the 9800GTX is a 8800GTS.

9800GX2 quad SLI (two 9800GX2) pretty much performed better than the GTX 280 single card and HD4870. But I dont know what your budget is. The benchmark that I saw, the HD4870 was higher in temps than the 9800GX2 and the GTX 280. I dont think you'll have to worry about the 9800GX2 high temp rumors. It's pretty solid. But the GTX 280 is probably the best at handling high temps. I really like how the 9800GX2 Quad SLi performs. Even the HD4870 crossfire couldnt beat it. So it's really up to you. But 9800GX2 Quad SLi is greater than 9800GTX SLi.
