You'll need a PCI-e slot and a power supply capable of handling your current setup plus another ~120w (minus whatever your current graphics card draws, if you have one). You'll also need 9" of clearance from your expansion port to the nearest obstruction on your motherboard (most likely the hard drive bay). And just in case, you do need a regular-sized expansion port, not one of the half-height slots that come in slimline cases.

You're good on power and graphics slot type, and you're probably good to go as far as length and width goes as well.

a 650 w is plenty. i have a gtx 280 running off a 650 watt. the only thing is you will have to make sure the case will hold it, it's about 1.5 inches tall and 10 inches long.

its best just to measure yourself, measure from the back where the slots are and make sure its level with your PCI-e slot and aslong as you can get to about 10 inches with nothing getting in the way your good

They physically use the same socket, yes. They're also fully back-compatible, so a PCI-e 2.0 card will work in a PCI-e 1.1 slot, and vice versa. You can think of PCI-e like SATA in that respect.

The reference 8600GT is a good 2" shorter than the 9800GT if my memory serves. So if you have another 2" of room, you should be just fine.
