It will probably last as long as the next generation consoles last. No one is pushing the PC tech anymore so you should be able to max nearly all games out till the next batch of consoles are released (god knows when that will be though).
the way this gens chucks along I think you can be able to use it for another 2 years minimum, maybe it will last you into the next generation ^^
So no worries there. Besides, its a great card :)
i've had the 9800GT for about a year and a half now and i've had no problems. crysis is one of the hardest to run at the moment and its fine with that, but with a few DirectX 11 games coming up i dont think it will last. but the 9800GTX++ should be ok for a while. whats the price of it?
I've been using my 8800 GTX since RELEASE without any problems on practically every game that has come out since then.
I have a 9800GT since December 2008. I'll upgrade when Crysis 2 arrives, I want a DX11 card and a 120Hz monitor.

same here, i need to upgrade for DX11. i reckon a nice new and expensive card will be nice, another couple of Gb of RAM and, as you said, a new monitor.

I'm still using mine too, why don't they sell these any more? Mine is from BFG Tech...the OC'd one...and it's not on their website and not for sale on Newegg, what gives? Would a second one even do that much for me?

You can still find 8-Series cards in places such as eBay. The reason most retailers stop selling the older series is to make room for an inventory of the latest GPUs, because they are more in demand, and the profit margin is much higher.
The 8800 GTX is a great GPU, however. You should be able to run it until all games go strictly DX 11, which I don't see happening for quite some time.
Besides, I did some research on the consoles, one uses the equivalent of an ATI Radeon HD 2000/3000, and the other uses a modified nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX.

The 360 gpu is more like a x1900 or 2000 based ATI gpu's at best, the 3000's came out years after the console did. And the PS3 is using a gimped 7800 gpu.

The ATI Zenos is the precursor to the R600 Desktop PC graphics card series. The R600 is the foundation of the Radeon HD 2000 and 3000 GPUs.

The Xenos's base(foundation) is true but its using 2004 based specs which a 2900xt or 3000's can easily out do the xenos.[QUOTE="DasVolks"]

Cool, thanks for the reply. I was considering overclocking my CPU and GPU. Do you think this is a good idea? It'd be on air, no water cooling.

Your noting going to gain much of a boost.
You can upgrade to a Directx 11 capable GPU now if you want to max settings on games like AvP, BFC2, Stalker COP or Crysis 2 to name a few.ive had this card for about a year now, how much more longer do you think before i need to upgrade to play games on max settings? i have the EVGA 9800GTX superclocked plus i OCed it myself.

OC isn't a problem, as long as your power supply and your cooling system is up to snuff. Just make sure you don't have anything blocking the airflow, and running the A/C never hurts (depending on the weather where you live).
But I would never max out a chip on OC. If there are any settings between normal and maximum, I would say stay under the maximum.
Edit: and get an application for temp monitoring, like HWMonitor, for example.

I see, well I have an 800watt PSU. I guess I'll post in the hardware forums to get some help with this. I've never OC'd anything before.
again another one buys a GTX , you cheap out and thats what youll get a POS X version.

What?! When I bought the 8800GTX it was the best card on the market...was damned expensive too.
most games of the last 20 years didnt push things, its only the games like Doom 3, Crysis and oblivion that I can ever remember pushing things. Its always been a mostly slow but steady progression. Which makes sense, people don't want to upgrade every year, or every new big release. It will probably last as long as the next generation consoles last. No one is pushing the PC tech anymore so you should be able to max nearly all games out till the next batch of consoles are released (god knows when that will be though).

What you have to look at is adding up the power draw of all of the hardware inside your Desktop. The GPU power draw you look at is the "Full Load", when it's working its hardest running an uber-game (Mass Effect, The Witcher, Borderlands). GPUs get pretty warm when you game, and draw more power than when you're just on the Net.
Don't expect it to last far too much longer in terms of reliability considering that you overclocked it. Even if it's running at normal temperatures it can still screw up, happened to me with my gtx 260 :(, otherwise you should be able to use it for a while longer.ive had this card for about a year now, how much more longer do you think before i need to upgrade to play games on max settings? i have the EVGA 9800GTX superclocked plus i OCed it myself.
