9800GX2 < 8800GTS SLI

Why spend $600 on a 9800GX2 when you can get two overclocked MSI 8800GTS(G92) for $500 total ($249 a piece and $219 after rebates)? The 8800GTS cards in SLI will most certainly out perform a single 9800GX2 and they cost $100 less.

The answer is simple. Because I want to use an Intel chipset. The 9800 allows me to obtain the SLI experience on a much higher quality chipset than Nvidia's current offerings.mikeblunt2020

While the 790i is getting good reviews, I don't see any evidence of it being 'better' than the x38/x48. I'm not saying its a bad chipset at all. What I am saying is that Nvidia has been lacking in the chipset department since Nforce 4. While Intel's 3-series chipsets have been excellent offerings.

I changed my mind and it looks like it didn't double the performance of dual 8800Ultras as the rumors had suggested.

Umm... No? They don't cost much more... usually in the $50 range more than their non-SLI equivalents. Of course there are those $250 enthusiast boards that have SLI, but theyre price isnt because of SLI. Stop spreading lies.

You talk as if everyone has an Nvidia board.

650i and 680i are outdated. While you can find some cheap 680i for your SLIing needs, I don't see the point in them when they have problems supporting Yorkfield.

750i is plain subtle now, not many manufacturers supports it due to its amazingly hot NB. Finally we have 780i, which costs $200 and upwards. Worth it? No I don't think so. I'd rather spend $70 less on a P35 board and go with a 9800GX2.

I'm not going to go into talks with 790i as that will completely throw the "budget" limitation out of the flow.

Secondly a CPU is not as much important as a GPU.You will ALWAYS push more frames with a better GPU but that's not the case with a CPU.Current high end CPU's are overkill for most games,you can certainly not say that for high end GPU's.
