The price is about the same on these two cards +/- about $20, so which one actually performs better? I've read benchmarks that show the 9800gx2 to be nearly as good as a gtx280, and I've read benchmarks that indicate the same thing for the 4870.

What's the better deal right now?

I think the GX2 is WAY ahead of the 4870. But I haven't checked recently.

9800GX2 is better, but only for Nvidia SLI enabled games.

The 9800GX2 is still the best card out there.

What he said. Namely, Crysis. But for the most part HD4870 is neck and neck with 9800GX2 while beating this Nvidia bad boy in some games.

But honestly, I really like the 9800GX2. If I had an Nvidia mobo, I would definitely buy a 9800GX2 because the GTX280 is just too darn expensive, price:performance wise. It's a great card.

I wouldn't call 9800GX2 the best card out there. If u look at minimum framerates, especially at some high resolutions + with some AA, AF the card gets raped.

Yup... so if you want to play all games old or new... faster single GPU is the best choice... so buy it... HD4870

I agree! Also in future you could crossfire 2 4870's and get much better performance than **** 4 way SLI.

I asked the EXACT same question a couple of days ago, and ended up ordering the 9800gx2. Performance was generally better according to the Anandtech review of 4850/4870 vs all, and eVGA's lifetime warranty and 90 day step up was very appealing. Not to mention, Nvidia's driver support is better than ATI's.

actualy GTX280 is best card atm....not gx2. also gx2 going to be phased out due to old generation type of the card and going to be replaced by the GTX model versions.

90% of people will only need 4870 and only if you got 24"monitor or using 2100+res will you need anything better

i would go with the GX2 since the HD4870 has overheat issues ... i know there is a fix for that wich makes the fan turn faster, but its not normal for an not overclocked video card to have those kind of issues. NVIDIA is definitly still the best bet from my point of view.
