My specs:

Gefore7800 GT EVGA

Pentium4 3.4 Ghz

3 GB of RAM

I have been looking at the $200 GPU article on GameSpot and I am interested in getting a Gefore9800 GTX. However, I sort of need a dual-core processor. Is it important to have one or should I just keep the processor that I have now?

Also, is it possible to replace a CPU on your motherboard without buying a new PC? And if so, how?

this should be in the hardware forum but since you asked... This is an odd setup. You have a fast single core processor and 3 gig of ram but a 7800 GT? I would check your hardware again if you aren't sure. The video card needs to be improved first though and I don't think there is much doubt. As far as a new cpu its very easy. You simply unscrew the cpu fan and a skinny metal level will be able to pop out. Just drop your new cpu in and close the lever. The catch is that your socket configuration must match. We don't have enough info here to know your socket type but it will be something like LG775. you just need to buy the same type.

You need to upgrade both, but if that is not possible, def a new GPU. A 9800gtx is overkill for that CPU, but if you are going or planning to upgrade fairly soon, I would still get it. You also need to find out what kind of PSU you have, because if you have a prebuilt, it might not have a PSU capable of handling a 9800gtx.

That CPU would bottleneck a 8800GT or better.

And the CPU generally sucks.

But so does your GPU.

IMO, the best thing to do is get a Dual Core first (Core2Duo, avoid Pentium D at all costs) then save up for a better GPU.

Shouldn't be too hard, you can spend 150 on a decent C2D and 150 on a Decent GPU and it should run everything fine because Consoles slow

down how much in-game graphics progress in terms of visual quality.

You need a new CPU, severe bottleneck.
