I haven't played them myself but I have heard good things about both X2 and X3.
I enjoyed Freelancer when I played it.

If you don't mind RTS' I can highly recommend the Homeworld series. The original game had an amazing story and is hugely atmospheric, at least IMO. Homeworld 2's story wasn't as good IMO but thats not to say it wasn't bad. Homeworld 2 is a beautiful game to look at today, and holds it's own against modern RTS games. Features brilliant space battles too.

i can think of a few.

theres freespace which is a very combat focused game. u cant explore in it though but its a cracking game. theres a free version out now called freespce 2 scp which is freespace 2 with better graphics and some enhancements.

theres also freelancer. this is also quite combat focused but there more too it. u can explore, land on planets and space stations and trade stuff. a very enjoyable game imho but it does get a little boring after the story. u cane explore afterwards but the range of activities u can partake in is limited imho. good game though.

if u want an MMORPG in space then eve is very good. there alot to learn in it but the tutorial is quite good. again u can trade, explore, etc etc. there is a monthly fee though.

theres also the x series. i would recommend either X2 or X3. these would be alot like eve but offline. explore, trade etc etc. controls are a bit naf imho but still a very nice game.

thats all i can think of....theres probably more.

Are there ones like what you have all mentioned with the ability to be able to get out of the ship and explore the planets as a personor no? I know im asking for loads of specifics but that would be cool? :D

Freelancer, you have the ability to get out of you ship and visit several places on each planet (bar, shop, ship repair etc.) though there isn't any direct control of your character.
Not sure if there is such a game that allows you to step outside of your vessel and explore the planet via direct control.

EVE Online and Nexus the Jupiter Incident are the only ones that come to mind. Both are pretty good, worth playing.

Independence War 2 could be worth looking into. (I've only played the demo, so I can't say for sure just yet. What I do know is that it looks good for a 2002 title, doesn't require top-of-the-line hardware, is rather freeform, and it uses a Newtonian flight model that more accurately simulates spaceflight compared to airplane-in-space models employed by more popular titles like Wing Commander and Freespace.) There's also the Battlecruiser/Universal Combat series, which apparently allows you to land your ship on planets and walk around FPS-style in later iterations, but the interface is nothing short of confusing(there's more three-letter acronyms than you can count!), and it's definitely got quite the learning curve. Definitely RTFM if you expect to go anywhere with one of these games. Finally, I'd mention the Starflight series and Star Control II if they didn't date back from 1986-1991 and 1992-today, respectively. They won't have much in the way of graphics(especially Starflight if you're playing the IBM PC or C64 versions instead of the superior Amiga, Mac, or Atari ST releases), but the gameplay is still some of the best you will ever encounter. (SC2 also has some excellent music and various alien races with a certain charm to them, helping it garner my personal award of "the greatest game of all time".)

X3 is a pretty good game, definitely beautiful to look at, but it really requires a lot of thinking to do well in that game. Either that, or a lot of time... manipulating the economy is pretty important if you ever want to get a big capital ship (or a fleet of them) and keep them maintained.

Worst thing about the game is that it includes starforce, but there are workarounds to that.

It's a copy protection system that most people aren't too fond of. But I think that they might have removed it from the later versions of X3(X3 2.0), I might be wrong but there's a good chance the steam version doesn't have it either.

Freelancer is imo the best space sim(leaving out the really old ones of course), it has a good story and gameplay, and unlike most space sims it's very easy to get into. Tho X3 might indeed be closer to what you're looking for.

Starforce was removed in the last patch.

And Steam auto updates your game, so you don't have to worry about it. ;)

There's an opensource space combat sim on sourcefourge which is quite interesting.
It's a remake of Wing commander: privateer.

Graphics aren't top, but the game is nice
