Play it through again and do the zombie chopper achievement (play through Ravenholm only using gravity gun) :) And I agree, it's a brilliant weapon.

lol yeah i was thinking of doing that! ravenholm kinda creeped me out on the first playthrough for some strange reason......ironicly i dont normaly get creeped out by games but that part of HL2 kinda did it to me....im anticipating getting to that part again so i can stick it to those really fast running strong predator zombie things  !

I have to be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the gravity gun the majority of the time.. Outside of just grabbing and flinging things or solving the occasional puzzle.. It didn't feel like something very new or interesting outside of the first 5 minutes you get it.

The gravity gun was fun, but I feel like it only existed to show off the physics and Valve was kind of pushing it on us. Its like " oh here's this awesome gun that lets you manipulate gravity, now lets put you in a level full of sharp objects and slow moving enemies and no ammo to use it in", as well as the end sequence where you ONLY used it.

I mean, its definitely got its uses when you want to play smart and throw a flaming barrel at some far off enemies as an impromptu grenade launcher, or toss grenades back at enemies (and use it as an ACTUAL grenade launcher), but in the heat of the moment I rarely used it unless I was given obvious signs of it being really useful (like a giant pile of explosive canisters miles away from the bad guys), or if I was low on ammo and just started picking things up and throwing them for minimal damage.

But my favorite gun is probably the crossbow. It doesn't shoot crossbows, it shoots superheated bolts of steel! It also pinned enemies to walls and was super powerful and accurate, making it useful and allowing it to show off the impressive physics engine without being a show of weapon. Nothing like pinning two combine with one bolt or throwing a combine off a rail with it.

What gravity gun have you been using pre-2004? It was incredibly impressive, especially for the time released. Such manipulation of physics wasn't conceived in games back then. It was very new, very interesting ,and very fresh.

Great thread, HL2 has a special place in my heart for physics alone, in Valve games i search every nook and cranny, other than LFD2 that game was sh!t IMO. Gabe knows how to innovate.

OH DUDE YES (sorry caps) the crossbow was awesome. i pinned one of the combine to the billboard to get that chievement and it REALLY made things easier in the later parts of the game when those juggernaut combine came out and i could down them pretty easily. that gun saved my arse a ton of times....its only downfall was the expectedly long reload times and the low ammo cap. anyway, i feel ya on the gravity gun. like i said, at first when i got it i didnt really see the whoopty do about it but then once i was actually able to ragdoll the combine at each other (unfortinatly it was only at the end) thats when it really got good.....also happened to be when you could use no other weapon! lol

I remember getting into Half-Life 2 and hearing all about this gravity gun. When I finally got it the Gravity Gun I wasn't overly impressed because you couldn't 'rocket-jump' with it like I was expecting. I mean, it makes sense given that you could propel things in front of it so why not use it to shoot yourself around?

tha twould make sense also considering the force you could use to push things away without even pulling things towards you. a rocket jump would be logical.

You can jump it with, just not rocket-jump.

I think I've played through HL2 about a dozen times... and I've played just the Ravenholm chapter easily a hundred times. With a little tweaking, and just a few more things to do, I think that chapter alone could stand as it's own little mini game. Just a quick zombie horror adventure. It's so great.

Im a massive HL fan, I think I have owned every single version of Half Life 2. Had in on Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Mac and my PC. I dont even know how many times I have gone through the game but probably more then any other game I have played. In fact I finished HL again last week and have started episode 1 again. I also get seriously freaked out by the head crabs, especially those black ones. Episode 2 is probably my favourite, loved getting the gnome achievement where you launch him into space.

The gravity gun is awesome but I prefer using standard weapons,

EDIT" that sense of empowerment they give you at the end of HL2 and beginning of EP1 with the Grav gun was awesome!!! aside from that, i just like shooting the saw blades at enemies! i think my fave weapon is the crossbow cause you can ragdoll pin enemies to literally anything!

In DM or in SP, try tearing a radiator of the wall and use it as a shield as you approach an enemy firing at you, then chuck it into their face and watch the ragdolls fly!

This. HL2 is a classic example of "Seinfield isn't Funny" syndrome. These days the gravity gun and the physics don't seem like anything special at all, but back when HL2 came out the physics were far beyond anything else seen in games up to that point. HL2 was the game that single-handedly started the industry's obsession with Havok and ragdoll physics. Complaining that the gravity gun and physics in the game are underwhelming is like complaining that you don't see anything special about HL1 even though you can thank HL1 for pretty much creating the modern FPS.

What gravity gun have you been using pre-2004? It was incredibly impressive, especially for the time released. Such manipulation of physics wasn't conceived in games back then. It was very new, very interesting ,and very fresh.

sorry yet again not for me.. And I played Half-Life 2 at launch day..

What game let you kill enemies with physical objects before Half Life 2? :?

Yet again after the first few minutes with it, I didn't find it that jaw dropping.. Really the parts that I thougth were amazingly cool was controlling the ant lions or going on the automated conveyer in the citadel at the end.. Or the ending where the explosion froze..
