i've played F.E.A.R., S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and HL2. HL2 is BY FAR the best. if you pay attention to the storyline it can get you hooked instantly.

Yeah, I mean most games are able to keep my attention pretty easily, but HL2 makes you really feel that you are Gordon Freeman and you can get really into the story.

I remember reading a review on here I think it was, that said that during the game, you never actually see your character, its third person ALL the time, which helps you feel like you're the character more than some games. I thought that was a great point.

Well in HL2, you are outside sometimes in large areas and can walk around, you ride on a buggy, etc. Theres a little more freedom whereas in Fear, you are usually in some plant or office buildings or whatever.

I got HL2 delivered on the day it was released. I installed it, joined steam and began to play. As i also had a few other games on the go it was a good few months before i could devote much time to HL2. I bought a new pc about 2 years ago and never bothered installing HL2 and never really got that far into the game. Is it still worth playing now? should i install it and re play the game and indeed buy episode 1? Does it still stand up to games such as fear and stalker?Frozzik

Everybody has tastes and dislikes but you shouldnt judge a game on your own preferences. Which you are doing for sure. And anyway you gave StarWars Jedi Knight 2 a (9.6) rating and that has terrible ai and apart from being in the SW universe is a above average game unlike HL2.

You have your tastes and some of them are fine but you can't judge just coz you don't like a cerrtain style. Like people who like Forza or GTR over Burnout or PGR you gotta understand that just coz you prefer arcade over sim doesnt make it better. When you can put prejudice aside then I think you maybe able to rate games fairly.

HL2 is a marvelous game the ai isn't FC or Fear but it doesnt need it with a brilliant intriguing story with so many different locations and pacing that advances and varies the story. Hell its soo linear but this just makes the game better as it tells a story far better than any other FPS bar maybe the original HL or Deus Ex.

I'd def install it again knock up the rez and effects and enjoy the story. Ignore the dumb ai and imagine they are like stormtroopers coz HL2 is just a blockbuster film pakcaged as a game. And its no Phantom Menace but a definate Empire.

It aint as significant as say HL but its sure a pleasure to play.

Also I found I enjoyed the game a lot more by using a 360 pad over keyboard and mouse. The 360 controller is far better for action and fun over accuracy and precision. Online is a no-no but in single player on easy-med difficulty I found the dumb ai became a lot more fun to play with using a controller. The game doesnt let you configure a 360 pad so you will have to use something like xpadder which is great as you can customize the sensitivity. But it def made the game more fun 2nd time around as k/m combo makes the game far to easy. And the tactics and weapons in the game mean using a controller you have to get more close quaters which suits the game well at times. Try it I loved it way more...

None the less HL2 is good and Mas El Bueno then El Lamo... IMO mate

Half Life 2 is great! Engaging storyline, Fantastic Graphics, brilliant game, and there are so many good mods out there that extend the playing time by hours. General_Gustaf

I recommend picking up the fakefactory's cinematic mod, its really cool (and no, not jst because you can dress Alyx in skimpy clothing, although that is kinda cool lol)

but with half life 2, the focus of the gameplay shifts constantly - from an early (stop reading this paragraph if it feels like a spoiler) 1984 style police-state opener to a desperate unarmed escape, to falling into a fairly cool series of well paced firefights, to speeding down a waterway in a hovercraft, to stalking through a horror movie style zombie town to speeding down a highway in a mad max style buggy to a tremors style stay off the ground scene to leading a team of giant insectoid monsters on a prison raid to crazy urban firefights with ai buddies to utterly insane battles against war of the worlds style walkers

that's the genius of half life 2 - the gunplay isn't all that great, and the game knows that - but the focus of the game isn't the gunplay, the focus of the gameplay is that the focus of the gameplay is constantly changing - you take the best fps games you ever played, you're doing the same thing from start to finish, no matter how great it is - it gets old

but half life 2, it doesn't get old

there's a reason half life 2 is beloved by most pc gamers, and a reason why it has about a trillion game of the year awards - and gamesdo not get worse with age - you owe it to yourself to check it out, and since it's already bought and paid for, there's no reason not to

SW:JK 2 is all about atmosphere, story, and mindless fun, so the nonexistant AI was not a problem. Much like Doom 3: the enemies are stupid, but I expect them to be... it's DOOM!

HL:2 was boasted as having great AI that would require some strategy on the gamer's part in order to survive. The fact is Gabe lied to us about what HL:2 could do. In reality, HL:2 bad guys had lowsy AI that was literally a step back from HL:1.

You see: HL:2's AI was a selling point that was not delivered. That is why I use the game's sucky AI as a major strike against it.

Oh man you totally nailed it on the head.  It was hard for me to describe just what makes HL2 so much better than the average shooter, but you just described it.

1.  Wait for Episode 2 to come out before you get Episode 1.  By all means, get Episode 1, its awsome, but wait untill Episode 2 comes out so when you get to the cliffhanger at Episode 1, you can just play right into Episode 2 (whcih looks 3x better than Episode 1, which IMO was 2x better than HL2, which was 2x better than everything else out there :P )

2.  Install HL2 now and download some great mods!  The best ive played are:

1.  The Hidden

2. Dytopia (has best mutliplayer FPS gameplay ive played in a while)

3.  MINERVA

4. Pirates, Vikings, Knights II

5.  Smod (optionally the Tactical version).

6.  Gmod 9 (if thats your thing).
