I've read on the internet that you can use two graphics cards together to increase performance.

But can I connect a 8600GT to a 8800GT?

Nah they have to be the same GPU's 8800GT + 8800GT

ofcourse both have to be exactly same GPU but note that different clocks isnt aproblem.
