A tv repair guy told me plasmas only last about 2 years.

Very Very far from the truth, Plasmas last a very long time. In most cases longer than you'll want to keep it for.

Initially, this was true. The first gen of plasma displays had quite poor lifespans, but they've improved drastically over the years. This is just a first impression that lingers on well past its' relevance. You would probable have to search pretty hard to find a plasma that didn't have a good lifespan.

BlackJack's right; good luck wearing one out. Last that I heard, most new gen Plasma lasted 10,000 hours minimum.

they've improved slightly since then. Most current well made units have a 60,000 hour lifespan. And that's only the point at which the phosphors start to lose approximately half their brightness, not when the set will cough up a lung and drop dead.
