Okay so sorry if this wasn't the best place to post this topic but I'm new here so go easy on me. I've recently had a growing interest in gaming on the PC. I'm currently running off my Acer Laptop and have been playing some Team Fortress 2 lately and have questions to ask on any and all people who play on the PC. It's been a hassle having to Google everything so I figured I'd just ask them all here. 1. The game is a little laggy, is there any way to fix this? 2. Can I install graphics/ audio cards on a laptop? 3. What are the best PC games I can buy? 4. What are good graphics/ audio cards? 5. What are good mouses or keyboards to buy strictly for gaming? 6. Can I still run 90's PC games on my new age Acer laptop? Again, sorry if this wasn't the best place to post it and if I **** up at all, just go easy on me. Thanks in advance.mynameisdan409
1. Try going into settings and changing the vidoe settings. Unlike consoles, games on PC have video settings that alter the way performans and looks. See if lowering some of the settings helps your performance. Of course, more powerful hardware is capable of better settings and better performance. You'd have to tell us the specs of your laptop for us to comment more. We need, your OS, the amount of RAM, the CPU and the GPU of your laptop, or the exact brand and model so we can look it up.
2. For the most part no. there are some models that allow you to install video cards, but they are usually specifically designed for it. Again, we need more info to see if your laptop can do this. Desktops are were PC gaming shines, since they can be small, cheap, and extremely powerful. Gaming laptops are very popular too, but they are pricey.
3. There's 20 years worth fo good PC games :) I'd start with GOG.com and Steam.com GOG.com specializes on well, good old games. They carry many Pc classics like the Baldur's gate series. Steam has everything else.
4. There are two GPU brands. Nvidia and AMD. Both provide everythign from low end to mid range to high end GPU's. If you're looking to get a desktop a GTX 460, GTX 560 ti from Nvidia, or a 6850 or higher should be good places to start.
When ti comes to GPUs, the first number is the series or generaiton of GPU, the others denote relative performance. So an AMD 5870 is a high end card of gen 5, while a 6970 is a high end of the current gen. A GTX 460 is a mid-range GPU from Nvidia of 1 gen ago, and a GTX580 is their high end GPU currently.
5. There are gazillions. I personally like Logitech's gaming line and Razers stuff is pretty good too.
6. Of course. But if theya re really old, you may have to jump thorugh some hoops (instlalign tweaks and mods). I would first try GOG.com see if they have what you want, as their games are guaranteed to work on modern operating systems and hardware.
I suggest you buy a desktop with
CPU: I5-2500K
GPU: GTX 590 or a ATI RADEON 6990
Price should go down in a few months

LOL, yeah. No need for that, unless you go all out. A mid-upper range is fine for todays gaming.If you like RPGs your in good shape, because the new ones can't compete with the classics. (unless you like hiking/LARPing sims or gay elf sex)

Well when I was in his state years ago, I would of loved if someone revealed to me, or even hinted at 2560 x 1600... this presents an opportunity for a novice pc gamer to start off on the right foot... as I am convinced that there is a substantial difference between playing at something like 1920 x 1080 versus 2560 x 1600. Now, this is all provided he has the funds. I made sacrifices to pay for my rig, as in I epitiomize what it means to be a CAG. (I would die without Steam or Amazon sales)Dear OP
I made it simple for you.
1) If you have this --> http://www.amazon.com/UltraSharp-U3011-2560-1600-1000/dp/B0046TX0VC/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1325642777&sr=1-1-catcorr
2) then please make sure you PC has a CPU such as this ---> http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BOX80623I52500K-Core-i5-2500K-Processor/dp/B004EBUXHQ/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1325642810&sr=1-2-catcorr
3) and a GPU such as this ---> http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Classified-Mini-Display-Lifetime-03G-P3-1596-AR/dp/B005CQQLNM/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1325642840&sr=1-1-catcorr
4) if you wish to play games like Metro 2033, Crysis series, Battlefield 3 at the current MAX
Ignore tha amazon prices for now... you can try nextag for price comparisons. Also, if you run out of $$$$$, then I urge you to ask your parents to take money out of your college fund and help pay for this set up.

How about that everyone was "the hell" about what makes you think he either has the money ot wants to spend that kind of money on a PC? I doubt it had anything to do with the monitor. :roll:
you never know... on the spectrum of things he/she may end up as a gaming "enthusiast"
people like this exist...

The TC is not likely in the market for a desktop right now seeing as how they just started gaming on a laptop. When someone asks for advice on upgrades, 95 times out of 100 they are not looking to spend top dollar on top end hardware. Sounds to me like Dan is asking what he can do to make his laptop gaming experience more enjoyable, what upgrades he can apply, and what games he can play. It isn't really helpful to recommend desktop hardware to a laptop gamer.
