Yes, unfortunately. You will only have around 3.3 GB of memory available, out of your 8. Maybe you could sell one of your memory sticks. Then you'd be losing only around 700MB.

Simple answer, 32 bit supports up to 4 gigs of RAM (includes VRAM) and in total you have 9.536 gigs of RAM, yes, it will make a huge difference, besides the fact that 64 bit handles RAM more efficiently.

Yes, fortunately for you Microsoft allowed for flexible license key use. If you have a friend who has a copy of the same version of Win 7, but it 64, you can use that to install and just use your license key to authenticate. If you have no friends, you might be able to take it to a small computer shop and get them to do it for free or cheap. This is legal and allowed by MS.

This thread here explains how Win7 32-bit might report that you have 4 gigs installed, but it might not mean that 4 gigs are available to this OS: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/048ed81d-0e9a-471c-99fa-ca6c26c956d1

As long as you didn't open it you should be able to exchange it for 64bit.

With 8GB RAM, yes, there will be a big difference. Get 64bit if you get a chance.

Did you order the full or upgrade version of Windows 7? as if you ordered the full OS it will have both the 32bit and 64bit versions of the OS in the pack, so you may not need to send it back yet.

If you ordered the upgrade then if you want to take full advantage of the memory you will need to send the order back.

I read somewhere that if you choose custom installation option when you install win7, you get to chose which version(32 or 64bit) you want.

Why not? :P TC, if you ordered an upgrade and are planning to upgrade from your existing OS, you have to use the same version. So if you have XP 32-bit, the only upgrade available to you is 7 32-bit. To go from XP 32-bit to 7 64-bit, you need to do a clean reinstall. So doing what Microsoft calls "upgrade" is not going to work. If you bought the full retail version of 7, you get both the 32-bit and the 64-bit disk in the box, so you're good. If you bought some kind of weird OEM version that only gives you the 32-bit disk, don't open it! as others have said. If it's unopened you should be able to return it and get the 64-bit version instead.

The online stores around here sell separate copies of Win 7 32 and 64 Bit. And it's not the upgrade either. Costs a pretty penny though, $120 :|

I wonder why MS even bothers with a 32-bit version nowadays.

That's weird actually, one of the big things that they touted before release was that you get both versions in the same box. I did when I bought mine. Which country are you in? Maybe it's a regional thing.

Its probably the OEM version, its sold as either 32 or 64 bit, but since the license works for either its not that big a deal...

Oh, that would make sense. The full retail version, the non-OEM, comes with both disks. It still costs ridiculous amounts of money though.
