It seems to me that most PC games nowadays are missing the achievemnts of their console counterparts. Far Cry 2, Bioshock, Dead Space,Oblivion, and i'm sure there are most don't have the unlockable achievements for the PC version of that game. What gives!? I would sure like some replayability or some extra fun in my games for $50 a piece

Achievements are fun, but I don't miss them if the game's good enough.

i don't care about achievements. some games do have them like garrys mod and tf2 has them. it doesn't really matter about those.

yeah, like going for a no re-load playthrough.

PC games don't have console game's achievements to begin with. with or without those in console ports, it's all the same.

Whenever a game has achievements I turn them off if I can, ridicules little objectives tact onto the game play that have nothing to do with the game itself.

I hated them in Mass Effect, I'm immersed in this world when the achievement butt pixie decides to magically upgrade my skills for doing something random.

Doesn't bother me. It's fine if a game has them, but I don't miss em' if they aren't there.

Why would you play a game just for the sake of finishing it.. and getting achievements..I play it purely for fun..

I don't need some silly pat on the back from the devs to tell me how well I'm doing. I can plainly see my 'achievements' as I'm playing through the game, every time I solve a puzzle and move on, or get that weapon I wanted, or killed that super-tough bad guy. I get far more satisfaction from these moments in games than a random popup message telling me I've got a meaningless medal for ten headshots or whatever. Big friggin' deal. It adds precisely nothing to my overall enjoyment of a game. If you want a game where something similar to an 'achievement' was handled well, go and play Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. If you found all the secret areas in a level, you were awarded extra force points to spend on your Force powers. So it made finding all the secrets worthwhile and could impact the gameplay slightly later on. Other than that, I view 'achievements' as worthless fluff.

I don't mind them. In games like TF2 and L4D they work really well.

They're usually not an incentive for me. However, I did play Clive Barker's Jericho a few extra times because of it's acheivement system. Basically, as someone who hasn't payed attention to Clive Barker ever before, I knew little about the characters or history, and the unlockables there were character bio's. That was reletively entertaining, that and trying to make 500 heads explode with a telekenetic sniper rifle ;)

Exactly Jericho was the only game I actually hunt achievments in because it deepened the already really good story and concept art for this game is just awesome... also resident evil3 had like 8 different end screens so I finished it 8 times and I enjoyed it every single time and was glad to see what happened with all the characters... and that's it, all other games like gta etc.. I simply don't care about them..

I honestly think that most PC games shouldn't have them. The only time I really think achievements work well is in multiplayer-only or multiplayer-focused games.

So true, and to be honest I've been playing long enough without them that I find achievements more like a gimmick rather than something useful (FEAR 2 awards for example, and award for progressing through the game...lol), besides I don't like repeating tasks.

i couldn't care less for achievements, but i like what valve did with using achievements to unlock in game content. if more games gave us in game unlocks of either new game play options/ guns or new skins for multilayer characters i would personally really appreciate achievements...

I think the main problem with achievements for the PC is that it's going to leash you to a Windows server, which will most likely lead to more random crashes and general, Frame per second, slowdown. Not to mention the extra time it takes to log-in, whenever the game starts.

And I'm sure it's not too hard to hack trigger the achievements, anyway.... for any PC version.

Achievements just seem so pointless unless you actually gain something from them. For example, in an FPS lets say you kill 500 of something, you should be awarded a new unlockable weapon/armor/ammo etc. for doing it.

If you're going to gain absolutely nothing from the achievement (Left 4 Dead) then why bother at all?

The only game that uses achievements really well is Team Fortress 2 because it actually effects gameplay with unlockables.

I never understood the appeal of achievements. They don't make a game more replayable. They typically don't make me feel like I have really achieved anything worth noting. Take Dead Space for instance, which I played on the 360. It gives you an achievement each time you complete a level. If everyone get's one just because they played, then it's not really an achievement. On the other hand, some games have ridiculous ones where you have to work too hard and what you get in return is basically nothing.

Achievements are fun and it makes a game a lot more interesting to play. Achievements come in many different forms and many games have them. The battlefield games have achievements but the way the xbox and windows live does it is a lot more interesting.

Even Valve has incorporated achievements into their service. I don't understand why anyone would not like them.

I think achievements are just a way of showing off, but pc gamers would show off their rig instead, whereas because consoles are all the same they show off how many points or trophies they have. Although they do occaisonaly work.

I have no need for achievements. I have this thing called my own imagination you know? It's great, it lets me make my own goals for games, like getting through Deus Ex without killing anyone, or finishing Thief: The Dark Project without anyone noticing me...

all achievements should be like Team Fortress 2's achievement, where if you accomplish a number of achievements, you unlock something special. Definitely would make players play the game more.
