So, what's up with this game? GS only gives it a 6.3 score. What separates it from other games in terms of it's story and gameplay? I'm seriously curious. It looks interesting and I'm always eager to be turned onto a potentially good game that wasn't a big hit in the markets.iwokojance
From what I get from the person that did the review for GS, that person tends to come off as a Halo fanboy. I've heard a lot of people say that Advent Rising is a rip-off of Halo (even the alien creatures look the Covonent (sp?)). And that all the bugs turned him off and that the game seemed rather easy.
I see Advent Rising as what Halo should have been like. The story is better, the vehicles are just as entertaining (though they tend to have less purpose in why you really need to use them), the action is intense when you have to try and take on mass amounts of enemies. And there's nothing more entertaining then when you get your super-human powers and you can literally toss enemies and objects around like rag dolls. And let's not forget the hand-to-hand fighting you can do...it's always fun to kick the crap out of enemies.
Just remember that most weapons and your super-human powers have an alternate fire ability. I've got a 5-button mouse, so the alternate fire is set up on my mouse buttons 4 and 5. It's very easy for me to turn the alternate fire off and on. You can dual wield weapons, you can utilize 2 powers at once or you can even have 1 weapon equiped and one power equiped. Each power and weapon has 5 levels of upgrades to them- the more you use a weapon or power, the more useful it becomes.
The PC version crashes just as the Xbox tends to do and there are times where the game would glitch and I couldn't get an elevator to go....so, the game is plagued with bugs from time to time, but I doesn't bother me.
About 4-5 weeks ago (may have been a littler longer then that) I posted on the boards here that you could pick-up a cheap copy of Advent Rising at GameStop.com (or even EBGames.com, since GameStop owns EB) for $5. But I don't see that available on the websites anymore.
I think this is a game that any action junkie or Halo fan should try out. Be forewarned, there are bugs, but just stick with it and you should enjoy on of the better storys out there in games from the past 3-4 years.
One last note, Advent Rising doesn't seem to run well on multi-core processors...perhaps there's an update for AMD that I just haven't downloaded to correct the dual-core timing? Eitherway, just turn one of the processors off in the "Set Affinity" and the game runs just fine.
How to turn off a processor:
- Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete)
- Choose the "Processes" tab
- Click on "User Name" to sort the processes by catagory (System, network, local and the User's)
- Open the application you want to run (in our case, start up Advent Rising)
- Look for "advent.exe" to show up - it will be listed under the User's name catagory
- Right click on "advent.exe"
- On the pop-up menu, click on "Set Affinity..."
- In the Processor Affinity Window, uncheck as many boxes as it takes to leave 1 checked (dual cores need to uncheck 1 box, quads may have to uncheck 3 boxes). Then click on OK.
- If you cannot do these steps before the game loads, just hit the Windows key or Alt + Tab to get back to the Task Manager Window.
The game tends to run really fast on my dual-core AMD and when I turn one of the processors off on the game (every once in a while) runs in super-slow motion. Which means I have to turn the game off and try again.
