A little while ago, I got the game realMyst. I found it a little boring, but I liked the concept. So two days ago, I got The Longest Journey, and I love it!

I'm looking for good adventure games, released any time before 2003. Ideally, I want a game with no chance ofdying, but I guess a little "danger" wouldn't hurt the adventure. I was thinking of trying one of the later Monkey Island ones, because they're apparently great.

Any suggestions, friends?

My personal favorite is Fahrenheit(aka Indigo Prophecy). You should give it a try if the idea of cinematic gaming appeals to you in some bit. The game was released in 2004 or 2005, but you do get to die a lot in it if you are not good at pressing buttons. Other than that I would... Oh yeah, you should definitely try the entire Monkey Island series. The graphics in Monkey Island 1 and 2 may be a bit too obsoleted for modern eyes, but if you play them via ScummVM(search on google, program made specifically for playing old DOS games), there are some filters which can make the graphics smooth enough to the level of modern flash games. The one unique(at the time at least) trait of the Monkey Island series is that you will never die nor be severely punished for your decisions, and therefore trying everything out is strongly encouraged.

I also recommend Indigo Prophecy. It's a fantastic and not so run of the mill adventure game that was really a breath of fresh air. I wish Heavy Rain (made by the same developers) was coming to the pc where adventure games are loved. Hoping for a pc port down the road!

Start with the first, The Secret of Monkey Island. It's the best... The remake is kind of lame; I prefer the original. Another great adventure game is Full Throttle. Play them both on ScummVM.

You could also take a look at these (referring to the free remakes, not the one on the bottom).

I'd love to replay Grim Fandango, but it's practically unplayable on the modern ATI cards I've owned.

Ya, all the lucasarts ones that people mentioned here are classics, especially Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and the Monkey Island series. Oh, and the new MI episodes released this last year by Telltale are really good.

Syberia 1 and 2: both great.

If you are looking for really old (80s/90s), there are dozens that Sierra made back when adventure games were one of the most popular genres.

edit: didnt see the 'no dying" thing so you may want to disregard Sierra. Dying was very common back when those ones came out. Lucasarts games are your best bet.

Are you sure it's the GPU that's giving you the problems? Grim Fandango can be run off of software rendering thus bypassing your GPU entirely and the graphics don't look much worse than when you enable hardware rendering (IIRC the only major improvement with hardware rendering is that you get AA). When I played it on my old rig (which had an ATI x800 pro) I had some compatability issues, but those were related to the OS not the GPU (I forget what I had to do to fix the problems. I think I had to use a sound emulator or something, or maybe that was for Full Throttle).

Anyway, as others have said in this thread already, Indigo Prophecy is a great adeventure game to get although you do die a lot in it if you aren't good at the button pressing sequences (however, these are generally easy so it's rare whenever you find yourself dying). All of the Lucas Arts games are worth checking out too, especially Grim Fandango and Full Throttle. The Myst series is really popular as well, but like you I found realMyst to be pretty boring.

I find it unacceptable to play such an old game at worse quality than we played it way back when... and anyways the software renderer would have been bearable only if the shadows didn't also trail behind Manny and remain on the ground. I tried many things and never got the hardware renderer to work well... Bits of Manny would stay on the screen after he moved, among other glitches... polygons went crazy when I got to the part where the big guy gets in the car. And I'm referring to the Radeon HD line of cards...

Needs more Broken Sword shout outs. The first is my favourite game ever made, with the 2nd not too far behind. Grab them both. Important. Important. The Myst series is great, with the peak of the franchise in Riven, followed closely by Myst III: Exile.
